JUST ACT, JUST NOT PUBLIC
Back in the day, public executions were held to “send a message” to the citizens that this is what happens when you choose to commit heinous crimes. This revelation of a livestreamed firing-squad death of the accused is not only unnecessary given the circumstances, but barbaric in nature. This guy certainly does deserve his sentence, but do we really need to watch his demise on live TV? Another jaw-dropping, but unsurprising act by a very deficient administration.

HEALTH CARE HORROR STORY
My mother is 75 years old. Two weeks ago, she fell and broke her arm. We went straight to the emergency department at Scarborough General Hospital. We waited nine hours, only to be told the bone couldn’t be set and she would most likely need surgery. Then came more waiting. Two more appointments. Two more consultations. Two more trips for a 75-year-old woman in pain, each one ending with the same answer: not yet. Today, she finally had her surgery, 15 days after she fell. Fifteen days. For two weeks, my mother walked around with a broken arm, waiting for a system that is supposed to be there when we need it most. If this is how we treat a senior with an obvious, painful injury, what happens to the patients whose problems are harder to see? This isn’t about one bad day in one emergency room. It’s about a system stretched so thin that nine-hour waits and two-week delays have become normal. They shouldn’t be. My mother deserved better. Every family in Toronto deserves better. The question is how long we’re willing to wait before someone fixes it.

(It is absolutely appalling, but an all too common story what happened with your poor mother. Why do we tolerate this? Why aren’t there marches and protest in the street about this?)
