WHERE ARE YOU NOW?

A number of college campuses across the United States erupted with protests against Israel’s invasion of Gaza and the subsequent destruction in Gaza and the death of Palestinian civilians. This occurred after Hamas attacked Israel and tortured, murdered and kidnapped innocent Israeli civilians. Why didn’t college students protest the Iranian government’s harsh response to the civilian uprising in Iran? The Iranian authorities killed thousands of people and imprisoned tens of thousands who were just expressing their dissatisfaction with the government. Why aren’t there calls for boycotts of Iranian goods produced by Iranian companies that support the current regime? Why didn’t some of the college protesters go to Iran to protest? And in an ancestral country, why aren’t there college protests against the Russian invasion and occupation of Ukraine, the vast destruction of cities, the killing of thousands of civilians and the kidnapping of children? Surely, the levelling of city blocks throughout Ukraine and the terrible toll the Russian attacks are taking on the Ukrainian population are worthy of protests. This war is taking a terrible toll on Ukraine and if Russia succeeds in Ukraine, other European countries could be next. It appears some college students are discriminatory in protesting the actions of various countries.

Donald Moskowitz

Londonderry, N.H.

(Those protesting have only a misguided and irrational hatred of Israel.)

A MATTER OF PRINCIPLE

That history will view Mark Carney as more serious and globally consequential than Justin Trudeau is a certainty. Whether his legacy will be principled and effective pragmatism remains an open question.

Steve Peck

Brampton

(We want to be pleasantly surprised.)

COIN A PHRASE

Re “Beware of parking scam” (Jane Stevenson, May 1): We didn’t seem to have any problems with parking scams when we used the old fashioned coins — just bring it back!

Iwin Diamond

Downsview

(Too costly to bring that back.)
