The recent spate of Toronto gun violence cries out for strong action to bring it under control. The police know exactly who is likely to be illegally carrying guns, but they have little power to stop it. We don’t need “carding” again – recording personal information into a database. But if the police can pull over drivers during R.I.D.E. campaigns to sniff their breath for a couple of beers, then surely they should have the right to stop and check gangbangers suspected of carrying a gun. Call it a permanent R.I.G.E. campaign (Reduce Illegal Guns Everywhere).

PRODUCTION DEAL
While everyone seems to want to raise prices of imported products, which seems likely to prolong this trade war, why not try the opposite approach – reduce taxes on Canadian-made products? I know this may complicate sales taxes for retailers, but maybe an alternative approach to ratcheting up import prices might be beneficial? I know I’d like a price drop for a change!

Re “Yank elbows in” (Brian Lilley, July 16): What was our prime minister thinking bringing an American into our government? Should the position not be held by a Canadian? Preferably a conservative Canadian? Is she bilingual? It’s about time that the Canadian people learned what is really going on behind the scenes in our country.
