Why do Blue Jays fans keep showing up to see a last-place team? Why that’s simple: They are lifelong Maple Leaf fans with nothing else to do. They have been doing it for decades in the winter, so why not go year-round?

BULL PEN

The Blue Jays used to have real leaders — leaders who knew how to build a winning team. They had Paul Beeston and Pat Gillick. They knew how to make the deals that won two World Series. Then the Jays had a great manager in Cito Gaston. He knew how to light the team on fire. He understood that doing the same thing over and over does not achieve success. Now, we have Mark Shapiro and Ross Atkins who trade for nobodies and give away our best players. And John Schneider? Brings in a pitcher who blows save after save, and seems to be afraid to change the batting order. No wonder they are in last place. But, as the saying goes, nothing changes if nothing changes.

GONE MAD

Does anyone else see a marked resemblance between Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alfred E. Neuman of Mad Magazine fame. Alfred’s “What, me worry?” lament and goofy smile are a great fit with the recent company Carney’s keeping, as per Warren Kinsella (“PM in bad company,” July 12).

(Don’t disparage Alfred this way)
