2 hospitalized in OPP cruiser-involved crash on QEW in Hamilton

No injuries reported as several Fort Erie-bound lanes shut for much of Sunday

Two people were hospitalized following a three-vehicle crash involving an Ontario Provincial Police cruiser on Queen Elizabeth Way in Hamilton on Sunday.

OPP said the crash happened just before 2 p.m. on the QEW at Centennial Pkwy. and that it involved an OPP cruiser.

Police said multiple vehicles were involved in the collision and the OPP cruiser sustained significant damage to its front end. Another vehicle appeared to have damage to its side and back end.

There were no serious injuries reported; the hospitalizations were precautionary, OPP said.

Reporter witnessed crash

A Toronto Sun reporter witnessed part of the crash from one of the Toronto-bound lanes of the QEW and said that the cruiser’s emergency lights were on when it smashed into the rear of a white SUV.

Officers said several Fort Erie-bound lanes on the QEW near Centennial were closed for most of the day, causing major traffic. The lanes were reopended shortly after 6 p.m., OPP said.

There was no immediate word on the cause of the crash.

Partial road closures for area

The collision happened as Niagara Region-bound lanes of the nearby Burlington Bay Skyway were partly closed to complete bridge deck rehabilitation. One middle lane was closed from Friday to Monday between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Meanwhile, the ramp from the Eastport Dr. collector lanes to the Burlington Skyway were closed overnight Friday to Saturday and again on Sunday beginning at 10 p.m. to Monday at 5 a.m. to allow for relocation of temporary barrier walls.

During the closure, two through‑lanes were to remain open on the QEW and one lane to the Burlington Skyway would be available from the Eastport collector lanes.

All ramps at the Northshore Blvd. interchange were to remain open and Eastport was to remain fully open as an alternate route to re-enter the Niagara Region-bound QEW.
