Actor Tobey Maguire rose to prominence with his role as Peter Parker / Spider-Man in the Sam Raimi trilogy of movies based on the popular superhero. The trilogy set the foundation for modern superhero blockbusters with Maguire becoming synonymous with the character. As a result, it is safe to say that Spider-Man is Maguire’s crowning achievement.
However, Oscar-winner Kate Winslet begs to differ and wasn’t shy of saying it to Maguire. The latter revealed during a fan interaction that a run-in with Winslet led to the actress praising his work on another movie, calling it his best work despite having a brief role. Here is what Winslet had to say about Maguire’s role in Tropic Thunder.
Kate Winslet complimented Tobey Maguire for his Tropic Thunder role
Tobey Maguire’s portrayal of Peter Parker / Spider-Man remains beloved with the $2 billion gross of Spider-Man: No Way Home proof of the same. As a result, Maguire has had a large impact on the superhero landscape which cannot be denied. However, it still isn’t enough to convince Kate Winslet that Spider-Man movies are Maguire’s crowning achievement.
During a Reddit AMA session to promote the movie Babylon, Maguire talked about running into Winslet while filming his cameo in the 2008 satirical action-comedy Tropic Thunder. Maguire wrote:
I worked on Tropic Thunder for a few hours, and ran into Kate Winslet who said that was my “crowning achievement.” At first I was flattered, then I was scratching my head wondering if that was a compliment or not.
From Maguire’s words, it is clear that Winslet appreciated the actor’s cameo in the movie, where he appeared as a fictionalized version of himself.
In the movie, Maguire appears in the faux trailer for a new film Satan’s Alley, starring Robert Downey Jr’s notorious method actor Kirk Lazarus. The trailer parodies movies like Brokeback Mountain and Wonder Boys, proving to be an effective piece of satire. As a result, Maguire took a joke on himself and Winslet most likely appreciated it.
Tom Cruise’s Tropic Thunder must bring back Tobey Maguire
Tropic Thunder was a critical and commercial success grossing $195.7 million across the globe. The film is notable for featuring stars like Tom Cruise in completely unconventional roles with Cruise’s ill-mannered studio executive Les Grossman proving to be a fan-favorite.
In 2010, it was revealed that a spin-off centering on Grossman was in development. Furthermore, the project was reportedly still alive as of 2022 with Cruise working with frequent collaborator Christopher McQuarrie to get it off the ground. Hence, if a Tropic Thunder spin-off happens, Maguire needs to be brought back.
The spin-off could focus more on the behind-the-scenes of another genre film, featuring a mix of fictionalized and real-life actors. Given the popularity of Maguire as a superhero movie star and the frequently memed bully Maguire scene from Spider-Man 3, there is plenty of scope to satirize the actor’s career. As a result, the spin-off could then go on to become the new crowning achievement of Maguire’s career.
Tropic Thunder is streaming on Paramount+.
