Co-stars getting along is a great thing while working in movies or series. However, the co-stars getting along and pranking a third actor can sometimes backfire. That’s what happened with Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles in Supernatural.
Although it was nothing serious, the pranks, jokes, and general goofing around on the sets of Supernatural cost the production team dearly. To be clear, it cost them an additional $1 million to mess up the repairs!
Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki’s Goofing Around Is Worth $1 Million!
It’s not something that can be counted as an achievement, but hey, at least they know what their goofing around cost them. Starring as Dean and Sam Winchester in Supernatural, the duo was called the Winchester brothers by the fans.
After the fourth season, the lead stars became a trio when Misha Collins became one of the lead actors as Castiel in the show. Although Collins had appeared previously, his portrayal of Angel Castiel made him one of the pivotal characters.
The Winchester brothers, naturally, teamed up against Collins off-sets, and the trio had a lot of goofing around. The pranks and jokes became routine for them. In an interview with Michael Rosenbaum on the Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast, Misha Collins shared his experience.
It was maddening at times, but it was also, I think, demonstrative of the fact that we had a lot of fun on set. Like, I think it is probably north of a million dollars in overtime that Warner Brothers had to pay for because of us walking around on set over the years, without hyperbole.
Well, considering that the show ran for 15 seasons, $1 million in overtime seems like a reasonable amount over the course of the series. However, Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki will sleep happily after learning that it could have been saved had they not been goofing on the sets.
Despite the constant pranks and laughs that the cast and crew shared with each other, there was a deep sense of understanding between the lead trio. Although Castiel wasn’t one of the Winchester brothers, the lead actors always referred to the other as… a brother.
The Trio Considered Each Other ‘Brothers’
As Collins revealed further details about what went on the sets of the iconic CW show, some emotional talks came to light. Portraying the role of Sam and Dean Winchester for several years, the two actors had developed a brotherly bond in real life as well.
Although Collins joined the leads a bit late, he was welcomed by the family like a brother, and this continued on and off the sets as well! Misha Collins revealed that whenever they ended the call with the other cast member, they would end it with a particular line.
And when we hang up or end phone calls with one another, we always say ‘love you brother, can’t wait to see you.’ I mean, we like really love and care for each other.
That bond was clearly visible in Supernatural as the series found worldwide fame and critical acclaim for being simply iconic. The series ran for 15 seasons before releasing the finale in 2020.
Supernatural received a rating of 8.4/10 on IMDB and a whopping 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. With Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, and Misha Collins in the lead roles, the show is available to stream on Netflix in the U.S.
