Outside of becoming one of the many faces of Marvel, Scarlett Johansson has always been quite the icon in the romance genre. She has played many love interests and starred in many rom-coms before she moved to the type of films she makes today.
Among these many films was Don Jon; a film where she played the love interest to Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s titular character. In this, she has several iconic scenes, including the one in front of her apartment.
It would seem that this scene was very frustrating and complicated for the stars to film.
Scarlett Johansson’s most frustrating intimate scene
In Don Jon, there is one point in the film where Barbara and Don end up getting intimate outside of her home. The scene has gained some recognition over the years, especially because their clothes stay on throughout the entire sequence. During an interview with E! News, Scarlett Johansson gave some background information about the filming of this and it is quite interesting.
While some would expect intimate scenes to leave actors feeling many things, this is hardly ever the case. In fact, Johansson revealed that the filming of the iconic moment felt more like stunt coordination than an intimate scene.
It’s very technical that scene. It’s like, ‘I’m going to put my hand on your ass here and then you’re going to flip around and you’re going to grab the back of head and I’m going to pull back.’ Literally it was like that. It was like performing a stunt.
She revealed that she and Joseph Gordon-Levitt had to worry about a lot of things when they were filming it, which made it feel more technical than effortless. They had specific instructions about how they would move and what they were supposed to do—instructions that certainly weren’t going through their characters’ minds.
The spectators did not make it any easier for Scarlett Johansson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt
While fans would love to believe that filming intimate scenes is fun for the actors, it is more clinical for them than it is enjoyable. Scarlett Johansson spoke on exactly this during the interview. She further explained why the scene was not anything special to film compared to the rest of the movie.
After all of the technicalities of the scene, there was also the aspect of the rest of the cast and crew. Since there are more than a dozen people on set at any point of filming, one can imagine that it would be very difficult to get hot and heavy in such an environment.
Then you look around and there are like 65 guys eating pastrami sandwiches. It takes the magic out of the moment a little bit.
Johansson added that after she was done with the scene, she would look around at people going about their day and watching the scene with their lunch in their hands. It is safe to assume that although the scene must have been a joy for her fans, it was not as special for the actress.
Don Jon is available for streaming on Hulu.
