Injury fear once more for Assan Ouédraogo

RB Leipzig have temporarily averted the first crisis of the season with a commanding 5-0 home victory over Hamburger SV. However, the joy of the convincing success was tempered by another injury setback for unlucky Assan Ouédraogo.

The attacking midfielder went down in the 35th minute following a seemingly innocuous challenge with Albert Grønbæk. After receiving brief treatment, and clearly in pain with his right shoulder, Ouédraogo was unable to continue and was promptly taken to the dressing room. “We still have to wait for the examination, but it doesn’t look good,” said head coach Martin Demichelis, who confirmed: “It’s the same injury.”

The talented midfielder had only just made his comeback on Thursday in the defeat to Como following a weeks-long absence. During that spell on the sidelines, Ouédraogo had been recovering from an injury to his right shoulder, officially diagnosed as a capsule injury, which he sustained during Leipzig’s training camp at the beginning of August.

The injury was subsequently treated conservatively. Now, six weeks later, Ouédraogo has suffered another setback, adding to the catalogue of misfortune he has endured since joining Leipzig from Schalke in the summer of 2024. “He was ready to play,” Demichelis emphasized, adding that everyone involved had given the green light for his return to the squad.

This latest setback is particularly devastating for the youngster with the international break looming. Ouédraogo had been hoping to earn a call-up to the Germany national team from Jürgen Klopp, who is set to name his first squad this week.
