SUMMARY

  • Taylor Sheridan’s bold plan for Yellowstone shocked cast members, including Josh Lucas, who doubted its potential to last five seasons.
  • Sheridan’s risky storytelling and commitment to deep flashbacks paid off, adding layers of drama and creating a richer narrative.
  • Yellowstone's success led to multiple spin-offs, with Kevin Zegers joining Sheridan’s growing universe in The Madison alongside Michelle Pfeiffer.

Taylor Sheridan isn’t the kind of guy who plays it safe, and apparently, he didn’t start now either. One Marvel star thought Sheridan’s plan for his hit series was completely bonkers — so much so that they doubted it could even survive five seasons.

While others stick to the rules, Sheridan’s writing feels like a high-stakes poker game where he keeps doubling down. Sure, it’s risky, but it’s also why his stories grab you by the collar and refuse to let go.

Taylor Sheridan’s wild vision: How Yellowstone went from ‘crazy’ idea to a TV powerhouse

Back in 2018, Yellowstone was just another show making its debut. No one could’ve guessed it’d become a TV powerhouse, not even its cast. Josh Lucas had his doubts when Taylor Sheridan pitched his wild plan.

Lucas, who plays a younger version of John Dutton in flashbacks, had his doubts when Sheridan promised him more screen time five years into the show’s run. Speaking to Tell-Tale TV, Lucas admitted:

Taylor did tell me five years ago, the show in the fifth season will have a lot of flashbacks. And I thought he was crazy. I didn’t think there was ever going to be a fifth season.

But Sheridan wasn’t bluffing. The scenes weren’t just filler — they were layered, revealing deeper Dutton drama. When Sheridan called him to deliver on that promise, it wasn’t just nostalgia; it was a meaty acting challenge. Per TheDigitalFix, Lucas revealed,

I sort of laughed and went on with my life, right? But, then when he called me earlier last year and said: ‘Here we are. I’m now writing the flashbacks I told you I was gonna write.

And they’re gonna tell the deeper different stories that are going on twenty years earlier, basically’. It’s one of the most interesting challenges I’ve had as an actor, easily.

Turns out, Sheridan knew exactly what he was doing. Yellowstone thrived, spawning spin-offs like 1923, 1883, and the upcoming 6666. Lucas went from skepticism to taking on one of his most rewarding roles.

Looking back, it’s clear Sheridan’s vision was genius. And Lucas wasn’t the only one surprised. Fans can dive into the tangled Dutton legacy across multiple eras, proving that Yellowstone isn’t just a show; it’s a universe.

Kevin Zegers hopped aboard The Madison, Taylor Sheridan’s latest Yellowstone spinoff. This heartfelt drama dives into grief and human connection, centering on a New York City family in Montana’s stunning Madison River Valley (via Deadline).

Zegers steps in as Cade, a new neighbor to Michelle Pfeiffer’s Stacy Clyburn. Tasked with watching over the place, Cade’s presence promises intrigue. Alongside Pfeiffer, the stacked cast includes Patrick J. Adams, Matthew Fox, Beau Garrett, and Amiah Miller.

Zegers, a screen staple since six, shone in The Rookie: Feds, Fear the Walking Dead, and Transamerica — the Cannes-winning gem. With The Madison brewing, he’s adding another powerhouse project to his impressive lineup.
