  • Florence Pugh is one of the most recognized actresses working in the industry now.
  • The actress had her breakthrough with the 2016 film Lady Macbeth, for which she won a British Independent Film Award.

Florence Pugh has been working in the industry since she was eighteen years old and has risen to one of the present-day A-listers in Hollywood. The British actress got into the industry straight out of school and has not looked back since. She had a phenomenal year with Dune: Part Two and We Live In Time.

Pugh had her breakthrough in 2016’s period drama Lady Macbeth. Set in rural England in the 1800s, the film received critical acclaim and was nominated for several awards including British Independent Film Awards. When Pugh was announced as the winner, the surprised star revealed that she had downed a lot of champagne because she did not expect to win.

Florence Pugh made her film debut when she was still in the sixth form in the UK with the film The Falling. She starred along with Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams in the drama and received positive responses for her performance. After a few roles on TV, Pugh got her breakthrough with Lady Macbeth.

The period drama saw her play a young woman who is forced to marry a much older man in 1800s rural England. Her performance won her multiple accolades including the British Independent Film Award for Best Actress. Others in the list of nominees of that year were Frances McDormand, Emily Beecham, Ruth Wilson, and Margaret Mulubwa.

When she was announced as the winner, Pugh mentioned that she did not expect to win and had actually downed a lot of champagne. She admitted that she was a bit tipsy as she received the award. She said (via British Independent Film Awards),

When I told my mom I was nominated, she said, ‘Well thank goodness because look at who you’re nominated against. You know you won’t win so drink all the champagne,’ and I’ve drank all the champagne and I’m slightly regretting that now.

After regaining her composure, Pugh went on to thank the cast and crew and mentioned that she did not expect the film to go so far.

Florence Pugh has established herself as one of the best actors of the generation now. She has an Academy Award nomination and has also worked with acclaimed filmmakers like Greta Gerwig, Christopher Nolan, Ari Aster, and Denis Villeneuve. She also played Yelena Belova in the MCU and is set to return for this year’s Thunderbolts*.

Pugh has consistently received positive responses from her film debut The Falling. However, the actress revealed that she felt the good performance in her debut was a fluke but the response for Lady Macbeth changed that perception. She told BBC News,

The Falling was a big, flashy bizarre experience. I kept on saying at the time it was a fluke because I did the audition and I didn’t think anything would come of it. Now I’ve gone from working with Maisie to doing a lead role. Lady Macbeth is a great opportunity for me to prove that maybe the outcome of The Falling was not necessarily a fluke.

Her performance in Lady Macbeth certainly gave her multiple nominations for Best Actress and led to her being tapped for incredible roles.
