Masashi Kishimoto is a master at creating character backgrounds, and not a single character in Naruto has escaped the treatment. Some characters, in particular, have great histories and tragic pasts. But Naruto fans will unanimously agree that no one can win Itachi Uchiha in the department.

However, Itachi also has a fair share of haters who claim that the excuses behind some of his decisions were terrible. Itachi’s treatment of Sasuke was highly traumatizing for the little kid, but the elder Uchiha also had his reasons.

Itachi Uchiha might be a great character, but he is often hated by the audience due to the nature of his decisions. While his compulsion to massacre the Uchiha Clan is understandable, his treatment of Sasuke often confuses fans.

After Tobi and Itachi massacred the entire clan in a single night, Itachi took it upon himself to kill his parents. When he confronted them, his parents assured him that they were proud of him and he needed to take care of his brother, Sasuke. As a result, Itachi felt like he was drowning in grief. He wanted to atone for his sins, but since no one from the Uchiha Clan was alive other than Sasuke, no one would seek revenge against him.

Thus, Itachi decided to create his very own villain out of his brother. He saw Sasuke as the only person who could punish him and decided to cast his brother on the road to vengeance by letting Sasuke see him standing over his parents’ dead bodies. He also fed Sasuke made-up lies and used Tsukuyomi to torment him with visions of his parents’ murders.

Itachi could have looked after Sasuke and ensured that he understood the Uchiha Clan massacre after he grew up. However, the elder Uchiha decided to torture his sibling instead for his own goal. Fans find it unnecessary and extremely selfish to put the crushing weight of vengeance on a small child who had to witness the dead bodies of his parents.

Why did Itachi Choose Sasuke to Punish Him?

Itachi had to kill his whole clan overnight; the grief is unfathomable. He even killed his parents by his own hands, and in their last moments, instead of betrayal and anger, they only showed him love and acceptance. However, Itachi was forced to kill them just so that his little brother could be spared.

His mental state at that point must have been pretty unhinged, and the Uchiha wanted to die himself. He knew that he didn’t deserve to live, but at the same time, no other Uchiha was alive to avenge the clan. His decision to create a vengeance-loving brother was extremely controversial.

However, by planting the seed of revenge in Sasuke, he also ensured that his brother would grow up strong and self-reliant. Staying with Itachi was under no circumstances safe for a child. He also believed that if Sasuke managed to kill the murderer of the Uchiha Clan, his little brother would be able to salvage the Uchiha name.

Itachi sacrificed everything for Sasuke just so that his brother could become stronger and live a better life than him. He viewed it as a heroic act; however, his unethical methods are still considered extremely controversial.
