Hurricane Oscar forms off the Bahamas

Hurricane Oscar, which the National Hurricane center has characterized as "tiny," formed off the coast of the Bahamas Saturday, prompting hurricane warnings for the southeastern Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

As of the center's 2 p.m. ET update, Oscar was about 165 miles east-southeast of the southeastern Bahamas and about 470 miles east of Camaguey, Cuba.

The storm is currently boasting maximum sustained winds of 80 miles per hour, according to the NHC. The storm may gain strength Saturday before it gradually weakens beginning early next week.

Hurricane watches are also in effect in Cuba, with the government issuing watches for the provinces of Guantanamo, Holguin and Las Tunas.

According to the NHC advisory, hurricane conditions are expected to reach the coast of the warning area Saturday night with tropical storm conditions likely to form in the afternoon. Tropical storm conditions could reach the watch area on Sunday.

Turks and Caicos, the southeastern Bahamas and southeastern Cuba should expect 2-4 inches of rainfall, with six inches possible in some areas, according to the NHC. Turks and Caicos will also likely face a storm surge between 2-4 feet that is expected "to produce significant coastal flooding" in the islands.
