It was the year 2009. Flash mobs became a thing and Barack Obama reshaped American politics by becoming the 44th President of the country. Elsewhere, Taylor Swift and Kanye West went on to create a moment that would be etched into pop culture history forever.

The MTV Video Music Awards ended with Swift winning the Best Female Video award for You Belong with Me. Others nominated in the category were Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, and more. Beyoncé was also nominated for Single Ladies but ultimately, it was Swift who bagged the win. Good for her!

Unfortunately, this didn’t sit right with West who decided to make his disapproval public on the spot. While Swift was on the stage, accepting her trophy, he marched up there and snatched the microphone from her.

“Yo, Taylor, I’m really happy for you. I’mma let you finish but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time!” That’s what West said to Swift and to the entire audience present there.

He was booed by the live audience and was also removed from the show. Figures like Obama (via The Guardian) and Donald Trump (via PEOPLE) condemned West’s actions and he later apologized on The Jay Leno Show.

As for Beyoncé and Swift, the former later went on to win the Video of the Year and she called the Midnight Rain singer back on stage to let her finish her speech.

Jay-Z believes the hate towards Kanye West was blown out of proportion

While West and Jay-Z have had their highs and lows throughout their relationship, the man was there to stand up for his brother after he received unending hate from anyone and everyone.

Talking to Radio 1 (via BBC), Beyoncé’s husband wasted no time in putting his true feelings about the ordeal out there. He admitted that what West did was “rude” and “inappropriate” but also added that the hate was completely blown out of proportion.

According to Jay-Z, West is simply “a super passionate person” even though his actions were “inappropriate at the time.”

He added,

Of course, it was rude because it was her moment but that’s the way he really felt. I think it was rude but the way they’re treating him… He’s on the cover of every paper. He didn’t kill anybody. No one got harmed.

To wrap it up, West has known how to stir the pot since time immemorial. Whether you are on his side or Swift’s, you cannot deny that the man knows how to leave a lasting imprint on the world.
