Hamilton cops crack down on speeding after deadly weekend on city streets

Police say multiple drivers were stopped during enforcement blitz after driving at 'extreme' speeds on city streets

Cops took aim at excessive speeding and aggressive driving this week in Steeltown after three fatal crashes in as many days over the weekend saw four people killed.

Hamilton Police said multiple drivers were stopped during the enforcement initiative after driving at “extreme” speeds on the city’s roadway, which put “themselves and others at serious risk.”

They said officers issued immediate roadside infractions that included licence suspensions and vehicle impoundments to remove the drivers from the road to avoid “serious consequences” from their actions.

Driver clocked at 100 km/h over limit

Some of the most serious incidents included:

— A 36-year-old Hamilton man was clocked going more than 100 km/h over the posted 70-km/h speed limit on Wilson St. W. in Ancaster while reportedly racing another vehicle. They said officers “safely intervened” to bring the situation under control.

— A 17-year-old driver was stopped on Centennial Parkway in the city’s east end after being clocked at 147 km/h in a 70-km/h zone and told officers he was just “going to the mall.”

— A 27-year-old motorcycle driver was stopped on Rymal Rd. E. after being clocked at more than 55 km/h over the 60-km/h limit.

— A 23-year-old Hamilton man was also stopped on the Red Hill Valley Parkway after going 138 km/h in an 80-km/h zone.

Drivers ‘putting lives at risk:’ Chief

Police said each driver received a 30-day licence suspension, a 14-day vehicle impoundment and could face substantial fines, demerit points and additional driving prohibitions if they are convicted.

“These speeds are not just numbers, they represent real danger,” Hamilton Police Chief Frank Bergen said in a news release. “Every time someone chooses to drive this way, they are putting lives at risk.”

The speed blitz comes after police across the region responded to two fatal crashes on April 17 and another on Sunday.

Cops responded to 3 fatal crashes last weekend

On April 17, a motorcyclist died after their vehicle collided with a pickup truck near Concession 5 and Kirkwall Rds. in the rural Rockton area between Cambridge and Hamilton, which was followed hours later by another fatal crash involving a motorcycle in the Harlowe-Pritchard Rds. area in the city’s southeast end.

A male driver and a female passenger also died early Sunday morning after a single-vehicle crash on Claremont Dr., which splits from the Claremont Access at Upper James St.

Police reminded drivers to slow down and make responsible choices to help save lives and prevent serious injuries, adding that road safety is a shared responsibility.

“Targeted enforcement will continue across the city with a focus on reducing high-risk driving behaviours and keeping Hamilton’s roads safe for everyone,” police said.
