Stockard Channing has no regrets about motherhood.

The “Grease” Star delved deep into her lifestyle over a decade after losing her partner and moving countries, and how life has turned out after taking one of the boldest decisions to put motherhood on the back seat.

Stockard Channing is a well-celebrated actress in Hollywood, with a Tony Award, three Emmy Awards, and an Actor Award, sandwiched between an Academy Award, a Grammy Award, and three Golden Globe Award nominations.

The legendary filmmaker confirmed that London became her home right before COVID hit, and she decided to make the move after her longtime love, Daniel Gillham, passed and her life’s pattern shifted significantly.

She expressed that her relocation outside Maine may also have been politically motivated because it coincided with an era of political shifts and transitions in the country.

Since Gillham died, Channing has been content living the reclusive life, adding that she has been married four times before her late partner, and they all represented different phases of her life. On living a child-free life, Channing admitted in her interview with The Times that they were considered during her marriage. In her words:

“I think about them now because it’d be great to have someone taking care of me. But, hey, children can be just as selfish as everybody else out there.”

Channing and her late partner met in 1988 on the set of “A Time of Destiny,” where he worked as a cinematographer. The couple was together as romantic partners from 1990 until his passing in 2014.

The actress revealed that her life in London has not lost that retro touch, as her wardrobe is devoid of designer outfits. She continued that while she does care how she looks because that is what is expected of actors, she still considers herself very normal and very human, and not a celebrity.

She also engages herself with pottery, occasional reading, and when she cannot fall asleep, her subconscious is always busy getting the junk out. Channing will return to thrill fans when she appears on “Practical Magic 2” later this year alongside Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman and Dianne Wiest.

The actress is also working behind the scenes, directing a stage production at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. On what is next, Channing expresses uncertainty, but appears to be around for the unpredictable ride of life.

Last year, the actress shared some updates about her life with The Times, explaining why she is not looking for a life partner. According to the movie star, she has found the sweet spot with her friends and the people who enjoy her company.

She quickly dove into work and how exciting it felt for her to be working with people much younger than herself. As noted by PEOPLE, Channing was starring in a new West End production of “Elektra” with Brie Larson in London.

She gave a review of their bond so far, reassuring her interviewer that they have been getting along pretty well and having fun trying new things. Channing’s view on marriage has not changed, as she also stated in 2006 that she was done with the husband and wife business.

The actress has had quite the journey with marriage, first to Walter Channing Jr., then to Paul Schmidt, David Debin, and lastly David Rawle. Since she moved to London in 2019, Channing admitted that she was grateful to have pulled it off right before COVID, and London made her happier.

While she has pulled the curtain on not settling down again, Channing has not stopped leaving scent trails of her charm on some of her co-stars, including Will Smith. It was noted that the actors starred on “Six Degrees of Separation” in 1993 alongside Donald Sutherland and Sir Ian McKellen, per OK Magazine.

During that time, Smith was married to his first wife Sheree Zampino, but that did not stop him from developing real feelings for Channing after spending so much time together on set. However, the actor kept everything professional, and only made the admission in his memoir “Will.”

Smith revealed that after shooting ended, he moved back to Los Angeles with his family, but still nursed a deep desire to speak to Channing. In 2015, when Channing learned of Smith’s admiration for her, she stated that she was delighted because the first time she laid eyes on him, she felt he was sweet and felt protective of him because it was his first big job.

Channing has been a well-known actress, but she doesn’t think she should go into the profession for the sake of the profession. The “West Wing” star, whose career has earned her a Tony Award, three Emmys, an Oscar nomination and several other accolades, admitted that her own path was anything but straightforward. 

As shared by Backstage, acting was never part of her original plan, and scarce opportunities marked her early years in the industry, including failed productions and even being fired. Channing nearly abandoned acting altogether before reluctantly accepting a chorus role in “Two Gentlemen of Verona.” 

Although she initially felt out of place among the much younger performers, the job ultimately opened doors, eventually leading to bigger stage and screen opportunities. Decades later, Channing has a sobering message for actors who are going through similar struggles. 

She described acting as an extraordinary profession to earn a living at, and she proposed that when someone chose acting as their career, it should be because they loved it. Channing added that when someone continues to encounter obstacles and no longer deeply desires a career, then there should be no shame in trying something different rather than getting stuck in a tough industry. 

Her advice ultimately came down to persistence without self-punishment: keep moving forward while the passion remains, but recognize when it may be time to leave. As Channing emphasized, acting is only one path, and there is an entire world of possibilities beyond it.
