There have been Governor Generals who haven’t been so good and those who’ve just accepted the position simply for ego or resume adding. It’s clear from the outset that this new GG has superior intellect, a stellar experience out in the world, and is a genuine humanitarian. She will not only bring Canadians together, but will also strengthen the image and worthiness of Rideau Hall in the Canadian context. Geez Louise!

As an Algonquin I am not excited about the ceremony and ritual regarding the installation of a new Governor General on Parliament Hill.

Although Champlain recorded the Algonquin in the Ottawa River Valley in the 1600s, we have been continually denied our land and resources. As early as the 1763 Royal Proclamation, our territory was allocated to the French colony and Indian Territory; the creation of the Canadas was then mapped on our territory; through to the provincial federal overlay that exists today where the provinces of Ontario and Quebec were created, again mapped on top of our territory. In this process of creating Canada the Algonquin Anishinaabe were ignored during the historic treaty process, the terms of the 1764 Treaty of Niagara were obfuscated through forked-tongue, our Holy Land of Asinabka was desecrated through the fur trade and lumber industry-the very economies that Canada rests on, today the provincial border continues to divide us, our territory has become the place of a nuclear radioactive waste disposal site, and now Canada’s land claim process has been imposed on the Algonquin, located in Ontario, that continues to deny us our land and resources.
