One of the biggest disappointments in Game of Thrones was how the showrunners omitted several interesting storylines from George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire, including Varys killing Kevan Lannister. The eunuch Master of Whisperers was not a very significant character as compared to the lead roles, but he had a very intriguing arc and it’s such a shame that they removed one of his best ones.
Also known as the Spider, Lord Varys drove many plots because of his ability to spin words and events that led to a lot of political chaos. The change in his story greatly affected his overall narrative, and even before the show ended on a disastrous finale, Varys had already become a disappointing character.
Game of Thrones excluded an important Varys storyline
Kevan Lannister was played by British actor Ian Gelder, and he was a relatively minor character both in the series and in George R.R. Martin’s novels. One of the biggest changes in his arc was his death, as he was killed by Lord Varys in A Dance with Dragons. In Game of Thrones, he was one of the casualties when the Great Sept of Baelor was destroyed by wildfire.
The younger brother of Lord Tywin Lannister served as regent for King Tommen Baratheon, and he was one of the loyal knights in the Lannister army. Indeed, he was known to be decent and dutiful, and only wanted what was best for the kingdom.
Varys kills Kevan in hopes that Cersei Lannister would place the blame on Tyrion Lannister or the House Tyrell, with the latter pointing their fingers at the queen. Consequently, chaos would ensue in the realm, and Varys would use this opportunity to put Prince Aegon Targaryen on the coveted Iron Throne.
Since the HBO series omitted this particular scene, it completely changed Varys’ personality as he became less threatening. He was one of the characters who had a lot of hidden agendas and vague intentions, but all of these changed when the showrunners decided to focus more on the main characters and paid less attention to the minor roles and the significant events in their storylines.
Varys eventually died in the series after Daenerys Targaryen had him burned by Drogon’s fire upon learning of his treachery. In the books, the eunuch still lives.
Conleth Hill wasn’t happy with Game of Thrones treatment of Varys
Even actor Conleth Hill was not satisfied with how Varys’ story turned out towards the end of the show. In fact, he almost believed he did something wrong. In his interview with The Times, he confessed: “I just felt frustrated with the last couple of series because Varys wasn’t the all-knowing character he had been.”
His displeasure with his character’s arc stemmed from his speculation that the showrunners and HBO wanted different things for the show, and he also criticized how the final season felt a bit rushed. In the end, he made peace with his character’s fate.
Game of Thrones is currently available to watch on HBO.
