In the anime world, some fighters become stronger by becoming calmer. Instead of letting anger or fear control them, they learn to quiet their minds and let their bodies react naturally.
These zen-like states can look very different. Some improve awareness, some make movement automatic, and others allow fighters to hide their presence completely. But when their overall strength and usefulness in battle are compared, some clearly stand above the rest.
6 The Pinnacle Of Perfection Puts The Body On Pure Autopilot
Ryoma from the Prince of Tennis. | Credit: Studio KAI and M.S.C.The Prince of Tennis has its own version of a zen state through Muga no Kyochi, or the State of Self-Actualization. At its highest level, known as the Pinnacle of Perfection, it takes this idea even further. It allows a player to use their skills without consciously thinking about every move.
What makes this state stand out is how natural it feels. Instead of simply making a player stronger, it removes the mental blocks that can slow them down. Ryoma’s growth throughout the series shows how powerful this idea can become. Still, it ranks sixth because its benefits are mainly built around tennis rather than all-out combat.
5 Selfless State Makes Tanjiro Impossible To Read
Tanjiro Kamado from the Infinity Castle movie. | Credit: UfotableTanjiro’s Selfless State takes a different approach to becoming a better fighter. Rather than making him simply faster or stronger, it removes his fighting spirit. This becomes extremely important when he faces Akaza during the Infinity Castle battle.
In Demon Slayer, Tanjiro reaches this state and becomes almost impossible for Akaza’s Compass Needle to read. Akaza normally uses an opponent’s fighting spirit to predict and track them, so Tanjiro removing that presence gives him a huge opening. It is an excellent counter to a specific type of opponent, but it does not give Tanjiro the same overall boost as other anime zen modes on this list.
4 Godspeed Lets Killua React Without Thinking
Killua Zoldyck’s Godspeed from Hunter x Hunter. | Credits: MadhouseKillua’s Godspeed in Hunter x Hunter comes much closer to the true idea of an automatic fighting state. During the Chimera Ant arc, Killua uses it against Menthuthuyoupi and suddenly moves fast enough to overwhelm one of the terrifying Royal Guards.
Its Whirlwind ability is the real highlight. Killua’s body can react to an opponent’s movements without waiting for him to consciously decide what to do. Godspeed ranks above Selfless State because it improves Killua’s actual combat speed and reactions instead of mainly countering one opponent’s ability.
3 Sage Mode Gives Naruto Perfect Battle Awareness
Naruto’s Sage Mode deserves a place this high because it does far more than make him stronger. By gathering natural energy at Mount Myoboku, Naruto gains greater strength, speed, durability, sensing ability, and much sharper awareness of everything happening around him.
His battle against Pain in Naruto Shippuden remains the perfect showcase. Naruto can sense attacks, read his surroundings, and use Frog Kata to land strikes that are difficult to see coming. Naruto’s Sage Mode was powerful enough for him to take on the reanimated Third Raikage during the Fourth Great Ninja War, showing just how far the form could take him even against one of the strongest shinobi of his series. Unlike Godspeed, Sage Mode gives Naruto a complete package for battle, which is why it earns the third spot.
2 Muso Tensei Turns Kenshiro Into A Living Void
Kenshiro from a still. | Credit: Toei AnimationKenshiro’s Muso Tensei takes the idea of emptying the mind to another level. The ultimate technique of Hokuto Shinken allows him to enter a state of nothingness, making his movements extremely difficult for his opponent to understand or predict.
The technique becomes a major factor during Kenshiro’s battle with Raoh in Fist of the North Star. Kenshiro’s acceptance of deep sorrow allows him to reach this state and draw on techniques connected to those who came before him. It ranks above Sage Mode because its strange combination of emptiness, unpredictability, and combat power makes Kenshiro incredibly difficult to fight.
1 Ultra Instinct Is The Ultimate Zen Mode
Ultra Instinct Goku from Dragon Ball Super. | Credits: Toei AnimationUltra Instinct is arguably the perfect example of a zen mode in anime. Instead of thinking about every attack, dodge, and counter, Goku’s body learns to react by itself. Whis spends much of Goku’s training teaching him that overthinking can actually make him slower.
The Tournament of Power gives fans the biggest showcase of this idea in Dragon Ball Super. Goku reaches the completed form and moves with incredible speed and precision against Jiren. Unlike the other entries, Goku’s Ultra Instinct is almost entirely built around the idea of removing conscious thought from combat. That makes it the strongest and most complete zen state on this list.
Now the big question: Which of these anime zen modes would you want to master the most? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
