Former Blue Jays fave Kevin Gausman pens an emotional thank-you: ‘Love you all’

Tip of the ball cap to spelling "honour" the Canadian way in his post

Not all professional athletes can make that claim, but recently traded Blue Jays starting pitcher Kevin Gausman was certainly sincere in that regard as we saw in many ways during his time in the city.

Gausman and his family’s admiration for all things Toronto and Canada is well documented, but was affirmed in a heartfelt post the right-hander published on social media on Tuesday night.

And a tip of the ball cap to spelling “honour” the Canadian way in that post.

“So many great memories with amazing memories that I will cherish forever!,” Gausman wrote in a post on ‘X’ that was preceded by three heart emojis. “Getting to represent an entire country was truly an honour that I never took for granted! Love you all!”

The post was consistent with the view towards Toronto that Gausman regularly shared during his close to five full seasons with the Blue Jays.

That he was traded in advance of MLB’s Monday trade deadline (going to the Chicago Cubs, on Sunday) was not a surprise. But it didn’t dull any of the emotion when it happened.

In his final couple weeks with the Jays, Gausman was emotional in sharing his praise for the city and how Canadians embraced him, his wife Taylor and their two daughters, Sadie and Sutton. Earlier in the week, Taylor Gausman posted her thoughts and thank-yous for their time in Canada and how much it meant to their young children.

Gausman won’t face Jays in first start

Now that he has landed in the Windy City and met his new Cubs teammates and coaches, Gausman learned when his next start will be — and there had to be some relief with his projected first assignment with the National League team.

When he was traded, there was much speculation that he would face the Jays on Thursday when Toronto visits Chicago’s North Side in a makeup game for an earlier rainout.

But Cubs manager Craig Counsell told reporters in Chicago on Tuesday that Gausman likely will start on Friday in Kansas City, when the Cubs meet the Royals.

As much as Gausman has repeatedly acknowledged that trades are part of the business, facing the Jays and Dylan Cease would have been a tall order for the veteran.

Gausman was able to bid farewell to his teammates as he found out about the trade as the team was flying to Houston on Sunday night.
