Fire forces evacuation of luxury condo tower in downtown Montreal

2 hours ago 7

Residents were forced to leave one of downtown Montreal’s newest luxury condo towers early Monday afternoon because of a fire that burned on the 24th floor for about an hour.

Firefighters put out the blaze around 2:15 p.m.

The fire began shortly after 1 p.m. inside a unit of the 61-storey Maestria Condominiums tower on Jeanne-Mance St., between René-Lévesque Blvd. and Ste-Catherine St., according to the Montreal fire department.

The twin-tower complex, which finished construction in 2024, has been billed as the largest mixed-use residential project ever constructed in Montreal.

The fire broke out on the 24th floor of the second tower. Dozens of firefighters rushed to the scene as smoke billowed from the tower.

One resident, who said they live on the 23rd floor, told The Gazette: “I smelled smoke and initially thought there was a problem with my hair dryer. Then the smoke alarm went off.”

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
