Financial troubles could force Unterhaching to abstain from 3.Liga promotion

The Bavarian club are on the brink of promotion to the 3.Liga, but may have to abstain due to financial difficulties.

SpVgg Unterhaching is apparently on the verge of voluntarily foregoing promotion to the 3. Liga for the upcoming 2026-27 campaign, Sky Germany reports.

Although the Regionalliga Bayern side is on track to go up, according to president Manfred Schwabl, several factors go against the move back to professional football.

A final decision regarding promotion hasn't been made yet, but the direction is clear. "The trend is pointing in that direction," president Schwabl explained.

Just a few days ago, after a last-minute 3-2 victory over Bayreuth, Unterhaching still had promotion firmly in their sights while sitting second in the fourth tier table. 

However, the main reason for the current considerations to abstain from promotion and stay put in Regionalliga Bayern is the club's struggling financial situation.

It's not so much the required multi-million euro guarantee for the 3.Liga causing concern, but rather that the current squad would find it hard to hold their own in Germany's third division.
