Every Dragon in House of the Dragon, Ranked by Power

Every dragon on House of the Dragon carries enough firepower to erase an army, but age, size, speed, experience, and temperament create a brutal hierarchy among them. A large dragon has thicker scales and greater destructive force, while younger beasts tend to be faster and easier to manoeuvre. Rider experience can overturn the numbers, as Daemon Targaryen and Caraxes repeatedly demonstrate.

Ryan Condal said the dragons were designed with different ages, silhouettes, colours, and personalities, while George R.R. Martin has stressed that dragons can be trained but never fully tamed. HBO’s official Dragon Index lists the core creatures, while Seasons 2 and 3 introduced Stormcloud, Sheepstealer, and Tessarion. 

17 Stormcloud is Brave but Barely Battle-Ready

Stormcloud is bonded to Aegon the Younger, but he remains a very young dragon with little size, armour, or combat experience. Courage matters, yet a hatchling cannot trade fire with adult war dragons and expect a happy ending. His value rests in speed, loyalty, and rescue potential rather than battlefield domination. Stormcloud’s history identifies him as a young male dragon, which places him last without insulting his spirit.

16 Tyraxes Is Growing, but War Arrived Too Soon

Joffrey Velaryon’s Tyraxes is young and strong, although still smaller than Vermax and Arrax. He has the flame and physical strength to frighten soldiers, but the older dragons could overpower him before his rider found an opening. The books describe Tyraxes as growing every year, which makes this ranking a question of timing. A decade later, he might climb several spots. During the Dance, he remains a promising youngster trapped in an adult war.

15 Arrax Had Speed but No Answer for Vhagar

Arrax was younger, lighter, and faster than Vhagar, which gave Lucerys Velaryon a chance to escape above Shipbreaker Bay. The storm removed that advantage, while Vhagar’s size ended the chase in seconds. According to Fire & Blood, Vhagar was roughly five times Arrax’s size. Arrax had useful agility, but no realistic killing power against an ancient veteran. 

14 Moondancer Fights Far Above Her Weight

Baela Targaryen’s Moondancer is small enough to lose most contests on measurements alone, but her speed, aggression, and bond with Baela Targaryen make her a dangerous nuisance. She belongs above Arrax because Baela Targaryen actively trains for conflict and pushes Moondancer like a fighter, not ceremonial transport. Against an injured opponent, that pairing could cause serious damage before raw size decided the result.

13 Vermax Has Firepower but Lacks Discipline

Vermax grows alongside Jacaerys Velaryon and becomes large enough for genuine warfare. On House of the Dragon Season 3, the Battle of the Gullet finally tests that potential, but enthusiasm and inexperience leave both rider and dragon vulnerable. Vermax can destroy ships and ground troops, yet flying too low around armed vessels turns his strength into a liability. His battle record earns respect, but it also exposes how quickly poor positioning can sink a young dragon.

12 Tessarion is Young, Nimble, and Already Useful

Tessarion, the Blue Queen bonded to Daeron Targaryen, is the youngest Green dragon of fighting weight. She is around one-third Vermithor’s size, but her aerial agility makes her useful for scouting, surprise attacks, and breaking ordinary armies. She ranks above the younger Black dragons because she has real military application and a rider raised around the Hightower war effort. Tessarion lacks heavyweight strength, yet she can turn a losing ground battle before larger dragons arrive.

11 Syrax Has Size but Too Little Combat Experience

Rhaenyra Targaryen’s Syrax is a mature dragon with a lifelong rider bond and enough fire to terrify any conventional army. Her weakness is experience. Rhaenyra Targaryen uses her primarily for travel and political display before the civil war erupts. Syrax could overpower the younger dragons beneath her, but Seasmoke, Sunfyre, and the veterans above her have faced harsher conditions. A comfortable life on Dragonstone does not prepare a dragon for claws around the throat.

10 Seasmoke is the Reliable All-Rounder

Seasmoke fought in the Stepstones with Laenor Velaryon and later accepted Addam of Hull, giving him more battlefield seasoning than many similarly sized dragons. He lacks the mass of Silverwing or Dreamfyre, yet his speed, responsiveness, and experience make him a dependable combat mount. Seasmoke sits in the middle because he has few glaring weaknesses and no overwhelming physical advantage.

9 Sunfyre is Almost Impossible to Keep Down

Sunfyre enters Rook’s Rest as a younger dragon and leaves mangled by Meleys, Vhagar, and the crash. He still survives, heals enough to fly, and returns to save Aegon II Targaryen on House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 7. That durability carries him into the top ten. Sunfyre may lack the size of the ancient dragons, but he absorbs punishment that would finish most creatures and keeps fighting. Director Nina Lopez-Corrado connected his return to the bond with Aegon II Targaryen (via Entertainment Weekly).

8 Sheepstealer Adds Wild Instinct to Heavy Power

Sheepstealer is an old wild dragon who survived without handlers, chains, or royal protection. That independence produces fierce survival instincts, an unpredictable temperament, and years of experience hunting for food. Rhaena Targaryen’s bond gives the Blacks a large weapon, but control remains the concern. Sheepstealer can hurt stronger dragons through aggression, though an unstable response to commands lowers his ranking.

7 Silverwing Has Size Without the Killer Record

Silverwing is one of the oldest dragons alive during the Dance and spent years flying with Queen Alysanne Targaryen. Her age gives her scale, endurance, and hardened armour. She ranks below the top combatants because she lacks their savage battle history. Silverwing is enormous and comparatively approachable, which makes her easier to claim but less terrifying than dragons conditioned by war.

6 Dreamfyre is an Ancient Weapon Left Unused

Dreamfyre is older than Vermithor and has carried Rhaena Targaryen across Westeros, giving her exceptional age, size, and flight experience. Helaena Targaryen’s reluctance to ride her into battle keeps that strength on the bench. Season 3 Episode 7 finally presents Dreamfyre during Helaena Targaryen’s vision. Nina Lopez-Corrado explained that the series treats Helaena Targaryen as someone frightened by the corrupting influence of dragons. Dreamfyre has top-five physical potential, but unrealised power cannot outrank proven killers.

5 Meleys Combines Speed With Veteran Instinct

Meleys, the Red Queen, was once considered among the fastest dragons in Westeros, capable of outpacing Caraxes and Vhagar. Rhaenys Targaryen adds decades of riding experience and enough nerve to face two dragons at Rook’s Rest. Meleys wounds Sunfyre and briefly threatens the Green plan before Vhagar’s intervention. She ranks fifth because speed, maturity, and rider judgment give her a fair chance against almost anyone.

4 Vermithor Brings Monstrous Size and Firepower

Vermithor, the Bronze Fury, is the second-largest living dragon after Vhagar during the Dance. His immense body, age, and flames make him capable of crushing smaller dragons through force alone. Hugh Hammer lacks the polished riding experience of Daemon Targaryen or Rhaenys Targaryen, which keeps Vermithor outside the top three. With King Jaehaerys I Targaryen at his peak, Vermithor might rank even higher. 

3 Caraxes is Westeros’ Most Efficient Killer

Caraxes is smaller than Vermithor, but he has years of combat experience in the Stepstones and an unusually fierce bond with Daemon Targaryen. His long body, speed, and vicious temperament allow him to attack from angles bulkier dragons struggle to defend. Fire & Blood calls Caraxes formidable, fearsome, and experienced. He earns third because power means little without the instinct to use it, and Caraxes never needs a second invitation. 

2 Vhagar is the Dance’s Greatest Living Weapon

Vhagar is the oldest and largest living dragon during the Dance, almost matching Balerion’s former size. She has survived roughly a hundred battles and carries hardened scales that younger dragons cannot easily penetrate. Aemond Targaryen lacks full control when Vhagar kills Arrax, but her raw strength can correct many rider errors. She destroys younger opponents, kills Meleys, and forces every enemy strategy to account for her location.

1 Balerion Remains the Unmatched Black Dread

Balerion ranks first at peak power, even though House of the Dragon introduces him through history, Viserys I Targaryen’s memories, and the enormous skull beneath the Red Keep. The Black Dread was the largest Targaryen dragon ever recorded. His fire melted Harrenhal’s stone towers and destroyed House Hoare without a conventional siege. Vhagar approaches his old size, but Balerion’s conquest record, lifespan, and destructive output remain untouched.

My top three stay Balerion, Vhagar, and Caraxes because each combines enormous power with proof that they can use it under pressure. Vermithor wins the measuring contest against Caraxes, but Daemon Targaryen’s Blood Wyrm has the nastier instincts and better battlefield partnership.
