SUMMARY

  • During an interview, Elisabeth Moss revealed what it was like for her to film her final scene in Mad Men.
  • The actress explained that she ended up getting extremely emotional when saying goodbye to Jon Hamm.
  • It would seem that the two co-stars ended up getting extremely close over the course of the series, even sharing and brother-sister sort of relationship.

As much as Mad Men can be called a drama centered around power dynamics, the show ended up being so much more than that throughout its seven seasons. Following complex characters with deeper intentions than they lead on, the series delivered an impeccable story over the course of its long run.

With this in mind, it isn’t surprising that the series made its audiences emotional in more ways than one. However, many would be surprised to know that its great writing did not even spare those who were a part of its cast. During an interview, Peggy Olson’s actress, Elisabeth Moss, revealed that she got quite emotional when she made her exit from the series.

Elisabeth Moss Was Very Emotional At the End of Mad Men

During an interview with Vanity Fair, Elisabeth Moss became quite candid about her experience during the finale of Mad Men. Having been a part of the series from the very beginning and having played an integral role in the story, it is not surprising that she was upset when she had to part ways with the rest of the cast.

However, it would seem that saying goodbye to one actor was more difficult for her than the rest. Moss explained that she got quite emotional when her character told Don Draper that she was leaving the agency. Considering just how close of a relationship the two characters had in their professional environment, it is not surprising that the actors also ended up getting incredibly close.

It all felt very real. I have a very close relationship with Jon.

As though she was parting ways with Jon Hamm in actuality, which she was in a way, Moss mentioned that the scene felt very real to her. She mentioned that she and the actor had gotten very close during their time filming together, causing her to feel greatly emotional when the show was ending.

Elisabeth Moss Grew Very Close with Jon Hamm

Later in the interview, Elisabeth Moss shared the kind of dynamic she and Jon Hamm ended up developing over the years they were working on the series. Much like their characters, it would seem that they also shared a mentor-protegé sort of relationship, with her looking up to him greatly.

There was sort of like a mentor-protegé relationship there, very older brother/little sister. And so it meant something to the both of us when we did this scene.

She even took it a step further, mentioning that she and Hamm were like siblings, where he played the role of an elder brother and she was a younger sister. It is safe to say that fans of the series would be very glad to know that two of the most iconic duos in the entire series share a similar dynamic in real life.

That right there is real, that’s actually, those are real tears, which you know, hate to break it to you but often we’re faking it. He held onto my hand and didn’t let go and then kissed it. None of that was in the script, and he did it on my close-up. That right there is real Jon — the veins in his head, I can see him in that moment.

Moss mentioned that due to this closeness between her and her co-star, they could not help but bring forth some reality to their finale scene together. She also revealed that some elements in their final scene were unscripted. The stars seem to have gotten so lost in their own farewell that they forget that they were acting. Knowing this only adds more meaning to their goodbye.

Mad Men is available for streaming on AMC+.
