A third Moana movie is now officially in the works at Disney, as revealed by Dwayne Johnson at a press conference. The actor, who plays Maui in both the animated and upcoming live-action versions, revealed the news while discussing the franchise’s future (via Variety). He mentioned during the Moana press conference:
Yes, we have talked about ‘Moana 3,’ yes. But first, live-action ‘Moana,’ we’ll let that come out first. We have [the] amazing Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller, who have been our writers … they will pen Moana 3.
Disney has confirmed that the sequel will be animated, continuing the original style that introduced audiences to Moana and Maui. This announcement comes just as the live-action remake prepares to hit theaters, signaling a major expansion of the oceanic saga.

By seemingly greenlighting Moana 3 alongside the rollout of this new version, Disney is clearly building a long-term plan for the franchise. Fans can expect the animated sequel to feature returning voices like Auliʻi Cravalho and Johnson, who have already helped make Moana and Moana 2 global box office successes.
Johnson’s comments about a “third voyage” suggest that the story will continue to explore themes of identity, leadership, and the mysteries of the ocean. While no plot details or release dates have been shared yet, the confirmation alone is enough to stir excitement among fans who have followed Moana’s journey since 2016.
Disney’s decision to move forward with an animated Moana 3 shows how strongly the studio believes in the franchise’s potential. With the live-action version set to bring new audiences to the story, the animated sequel can reward longtime fans while also welcoming those who discover the world of Motunui through the remake.
For now, the focus remains on the upcoming live-action film, but the path forward is an animated trilogy, and the ocean is calling Moana back once again.
