On August 31, 2026, Duane “Keefe D” Davis was found guilty of iconic rapper Tupac Shakur’s murder by a jury. On Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2026, Davis finally found out his fate as sentencing took place in a Downtown Las Vegas courtroom.

The trial that began on August 10 went faster than anyone anticipated it would, and it didn’t take the jury long to come to their decision. The news of his guilty verdict hit just days before the 30th anniversary of the day Tupac Shakur was shot while traveling on Flamingo Road near Koval Lane after leaving a fight at the MGM Grand. He died on September 13, 1996 at University Medical Center, just six days after being shot.

Despite not being the person who fired off the shot that ultimately took the life of the popular rapper, Davis was found guilty by the jury of 12 in August 2026.

According to the Washington Post, the former leader of the South Side Compton Crips was “found guilty of orchestrating the shooting, even though authorities said he did not pull the trigger.”

In previous interviews and in his 2019 memoir, “Compton Street Legend,” Davis admitted that he was seeking revenge after Tupac and his associates beat up his nephew. Davis’ attorney argued that these statements shouldn’t be completely believed, but the jury wasn’t influenced by the defense.

Before the start of the trial in August, Davis was asked by reporters why he refused to take a plea deal. He told them he “didn’t do nothing” and figures he will be dead in 10 years so he’s “not going to take no plea deal.”

“I’m 63. I had a cancer battle,” he said. “The average American lives to be like 74 years old. Ten years, I’m dead. So why would I want to take a plea deal?”

Davis was a longtime person of interest in the case, and even publicly discussed the night of the shooting in his memoir.

In July 2023, investigators searched a home in Henderson, Nevada, right outside of Las Vegas, that’s connected to Davis, and found a .40-caliber pistol, ammunition, a bullet magazine, and photos associated with the shooting.

For three decades, Tupac’s murder remained an unsolved mystery, despite the fact that investigators knew the details of the murder. The case stalled without an arrest for many years, but in 2023, Davis was indicted on a murder charge.

Duane Davis Finally Learned His Fate

On Tuesday morning, Davis was sentenced to “40 years to life.”

Ahead of learning his fate, Tupac’s younger sister, Sekyiwa Shakur, gave an emotional plea to the judge on behalf of her brother’s life. She shared stories of her time with him, how much she misses him, and the impact of losing him at such a young age. She shared that she had multiple suicide attempts since his death, and more about maneuvering life without Tupac.

Maurice Shakur, Tupac’s brother, also shared some emotional words ahead of sentencing.

Before announcing Davis’ fate, the judge said, “Mr. Davis, for three years, I’ve heard you say some variation of the same thing, and it’s something like, ‘Yeah, I was involved in this, but I’m different. I’ve moved on. I got out of Compton. I’m a grandfather now.’ I’m here to tell you that’s not how this works. You don’t get to take a man from his family. You don’t get to take his very life, his whole future from him and just walk away from it.”

She added, “It took us 30 years, but at this time, you are going to face justice for what you did on September 7, 1996.”

It was then that he heard his sentence, “Guilty of first-degree murder with use of a deadly weapon, a felony. As to the first-degree murder portion, you are sentenced to 20 years to life. As to the deadly weapon enhancement, you are sentenced to a mandatory consecutive 20 years to life. The aggregate sentence is 40 years to life. You have 731 days credit time served toward that sentence.”

Back on September 7, 1996, Tupac was riding in a car with Marion “Suge” Knight of Death Row Records on their way to a club after the Mike Tyson vs. Bruce Seldon fight at MGM Grand. While the car was stopped at a light at the intersection of Koval Lane and Flamingo Road, gunfire erupted and Tupac was shot. He was rushed to University Medical Center where he remained hospitalized until his death on September 13. He was 25 years old.

The scene of the crime remains a hotspot for many fans to still visit. Two poles at the intersection have become a memorial for Tupac, where fans leave messages and visit to pay their respect to the rapper whose music is still making an impact to this day.
