Doug Ford appeared ecstatic to see a political shift south of the border.

The Ontario premier spoke to reporters at Queen’s Park a day after the U.S. midterm elections saw the Democratic Party take control of the Senate and House of Representatives away from Republicans.
“I was doing cartwheels down the street,” Ford said about watching election results roll in Tuesday evening.
“And you’ve never seen a big guy like me doing cartwheels, jumping up and down, when the results were coming in.”
Voters made their voices heard
Ford said the American public made their voices heard on issues like the cost of living, gas prices, and the war with Iran.
“But most important is tariffs, because that’s all tied into the cost of living,” Ford said. “And when I was down there voicing our opinion, no matter if it’s within the U.S. media or going face-to-face with governors, a tariff on Canada was nothing more than a tax on the American people.”
Since returning to the Oval Office, Donald Trump has been fond of using tariffs on the country’s most important trading partners, including Canada and Mexico, despite a free trade deal the U.S. President signed himself.

The Trump Administration is using aggressive tariffs and tax incentives to reshore manufacturing and pressure foreign governments in an effort to reduce trade deficits, which the president believes other countries are taking advantage of the U.S.

Ministers will meet with new U.S. officials
Ford said, as soon as the new U.S. Congress is sworn in, he will direct his ministers to meet with the newly elected officials.
But he doesn’t believe the trade war is officially over.
“And of course I’ll be talking to the governors and seeing how we can move forward, but let’s be under no illusion that this trade war is done,” he said. “It’s not done, it’s not even close to being done because the president still has the power (to levy tariffs).”
