However, it was recently confirmed that the sequel to The Batman will be released in 2027. This news disappointed the fans. In light of the delay, Matt Reeves may have revealed some exciting information about The Batman 2 to maintain excitement surrounding James Gunn’s DCU. What exactly did he reveal? Let’s find out. 

Matt Reeves teases the main villain of The Batman 2

The Batman, released on 4th March 2022, was a hit among fans. Matt Reeves did a great job with the movie, showcasing Batman in his 20s played by Robert Pattinson. Fans of the movie were looking forward to the sequel which was unfortunately delayed to 2027. In a recent interview with Deadline, Reeves was asked about The Batman 2 and he said,

I think what I am excited about is I feel like we’re doing something that absolutely continues where the story came from but is something I hope people are really surprised by.

Fans started speculating about what the surprise is going to be. According to popular opinion, it has to be that Mr. Freeze is may be the main villain in The Batman 2. Considering that Riddler and Penguin have already been featured, it only makes sense that Mr. Freeze is next to meet the fists of the Dark Knight. 

The last time Mr. Freeze was shown on-screen was in Batman and Robin released in 1997, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger. The movie was considered a failure and critics called it a disappointment. Hence, The Batman 2 will make a great platform to correct the mistakes of the past and showcase a far better version of the villain. 

Why was The Batman 2’s release delayed?

The Batman’s sequel was initially supposed to be released in October 2025. The release date has been delayed twice now, to October 2026 and now, October 2027. James Gunn recently commented that it was common for a sequel to be released after a gap of 5 or more years. 

Back in 2023, Matt Reeves had his process interrupted due to the writer strikes. After this, Reeves started working on the first season of the drama series The Penguin. In 2024, James Gunn confirmed that large chunks of the script were turned in by Reeves, not the full script. Now, Warner Bros. announced the delay to 2027. According to Deadline the production won’t start till late summer and a movie like this with a heavy VFX load won’t finish in time, hence the delay. 

The Batman 2 is scheduled to release on 1st October 2027.
