Needing a regulation-time victory to clinch a playoff spot, the Charge defeated the Boston Fleet 2-1 on a Brianne Jenner goal at 3:46 of overtime Wednesday at Tsongas Center in Lowell, Mass.

It was the third straight victory for the Charge, but it was not enough to make for an easy weekend.

Ottawa sits in the Professional Women’s Hockey League’s fourth and final playoff spot, three points ahead of the Toronto Sceptres.

When the Charge face the Sceptres at TD Place on Saturday afternoon, Ottawa will clinch a post-season berth only by avoiding a regulation-time loss.

“We were desperate, we knew that one (extra) point mattered,” Jenner said in a post-game TV interview. “We wanted three, but we knew that one point mattered.”

Ottawa and Toronto have evenly split their season series to date, with both teams winning two games.

Last season, Katerina Mrazova scored an overtime goal to clinch the Charge’s first playoff berth in the season’s last game at Coca-Cola Coliseum in Toronto.

In 2024, the PWHL’s inaugural campaign, Ottawa lost the final game 5-2 at Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto to fall just short of post-season play.

The loss was a big one for Boston, which could have moved one point ahead of the Montreal Victoire for first place in the PWHL standings.
