Creature Commandos opens its fifth episode with General Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo) and Eric Frankenstein (David Harbour) spying on Professor Isla McPherson’s class. She tells the class that the most interesting part of Themyscira is “the lesbians,” of course. Flag and Frankenstein find her behavior unusual, mainly since Waller (Viola Davis) now listens to her.

The deal is that Eric will help the General investigate McPherson (Stephanie Beatriz) and save Ilana (Maria Bakalova), proving that Circe is setting up his lover—not his love—as a supervillain. Flag then assists Frankenstein with The Bride (Indira Varma), which does not sit well with Eric, who wants to get to his part of the deal immediately.

Max’s Creature Commandos Season 1 Episode 5: Why is a Woman “Walking” a Cat a Bad Omen?

When Frank and Eric see a woman walking a cat on a leash along the sidewalk, Eric believes it is a bad omen—because he “knows these things.” At this point, it becomes apparent that this episode delves into Eric Frankenstein’s origin story. We are then taken to a flashback of Eric washing ashore and being taken in by an old, blind gypsy woman.

Returning to the present, Frank and Eric break into MacPherson’s apartment. Inside, they find more cats, more leashes, and, oh—MacPherson herself, with her throat slit. This confirms that MacPherson is dead. But if that’s true, who is the woman teaching her class? Flag deduces that the Princess may be in danger. He urgently calls to warn her, saying the Commandos will kill her.

Hilariously, he struggles to deliver the warning because Eric keeps interrupting, urging the General to tell Ilana about him and their new budding friendship. Also, did you notice Eric picking up the winged helmet? Could this be a foreshadowing of “Hawkgirl”?

Who is Clayface?

Clayface is a dangerous supervillain and shapeshifter. Flag and Eric hear MacPherson enter the home and move to the living room, where she powers up the Xbox and appears to start playing Mortal Kombat. Suddenly, the professor morphs into a Jabba-the-Hutt-like gray being. Clayface quickly senses their presence as they attempt to escape.

The villain tries to consume them both, but Eric saves their lives by creating a diversion: he pulls out the electrical wires, causing an explosion that destroys the shapeshifter. Meanwhile, Alexi attempts to arrest The Bride, Nina, Weasel, and Doctor Phosphorous, as Flag had tipped off the princess about their true intentions.

However, the good doctor responds by punching Alexi in the face—decapitating him in the process. The Bride and Doctor Phosphorus take out most of the soldiers and escape. Ultimately, the princess orders that the commandoes must be found and killed.

Is Max’s Creature Commandos Season 1 Episode 5 Ending Explained: Why Does Eric Kill the Gypsy Woman?

James Gunn ends episode five of Creature Commandos with two shocking scenes. Rick Flag appears to die in Eric’s arms (while the monster begs the General to tell him what The Bride said about him). Additionally, in the flashback, we see Eric brutally kill the gypsy woman who took him in and used him to cure her loneliness. As he leaves, he takes her dog with him.

Eric may have killed the woman because he wanted to stay hidden. Perhaps he believed the old woman would succumb to a more profound sense of loneliness and loss of meaning after experiencing happiness with him. However, it’s hard to determine his motives at this point.
