A mystery UK celebrity’s mental health was already fragile before two major news outlets confronted him with sexual misconduct allegations — and a judge has now detailed the extent of his psychiatric deterioration as he fought to keep the reports from being published.

The anonymous man, identified in court only as “PPT,” was diagnosed with Bipolar Type II Disorder and was experiencing a depressive episode, according to a 52-page High Court judgment.

The court-appointed psychiatrist, Dr. Inti Qurashi, also identified a history of developmental trauma and personality-related vulnerabilities that affected the celebrity’s emotional regulation and ability to withstand severe psychological distress.

The judgment states that he had a significant psychiatric history before being contacted about the allegations, including recurrent depression, longstanding suicidal thoughts and previous suicidal behavior.

His condition deteriorated acutely after receiving the letters from Independent Television News (ITN) and the Guardian in May, with the judge – Justice Nicklin – finding that the outlets’ communications precipitated a severe decline in his mental health.

The celebrity said he could not endure the adverse publicity and wanted to take his own life, according to the judgment.

His assistant described the steps he took and the urgent intervention that followed, with contemporaneous messages and documents cited in support of the account.

The celebrity was voluntarily admitted to a psychiatric hospital later that day.

The two letters sent on May 18, 2026, contained a combined 278 numbered points and requested a response within a short period, according to the judgment.

The celebrity’s representatives argued that the scale and presentation of the allegations contributed to his immediate psychiatric deterioration.

However, the Guardian had actually approached him about allegations of inappropriate conduct four years earlier, in May 2022.

He denied those claims, which did not result in a published article at the time.

The judgment also offers a closer look at the scope of the investigation. ITN and the Guardian began conducting their inquiries separately before agreeing to work together in April 2023.

Their journalists ultimately spoke with more than 100 people, including more than 30 sources said to have firsthand accounts.

Those interviewed included alleged victims, friends, colleagues, former partners and relatives, while reporters also reviewed contemporaneous messages, emails and other documents.

The outlets said no sources were paid or offered incentives.

The judge also noted that the celebrity had said he would circumvent measures intended to stop him from taking his own life if the allegations were published.

In a particularly troubling finding, the court said there was evidence of recent preparatory conduct and attempts to prevent people in his protective circle from monitoring his movements or spending.

The judge further noted that the celebrity’s risk for suicide escalated after he was discharged from the hospital. He did not accept the full package of NHS community mental-health support offered to him, instead continuing treatment with a private psychiatrist. He later declined crisis planning and voluntary admission.

The psychiatrist identified several periods when the celebrity’s suicide risk would be especially elevated, including the days before the court’s decision, when he was notified of the ruling and, if publication went ahead, when he learned it was imminent and when it actually occurred.

The judgment said there was no fixed date when publication would become clinically safe simply with the passage of time.

The celebrity was compulsorily admitted to a psychiatric hospital under the Mental Health Act on Oct. 22, shortly before trial.

The psychiatrist said treatment could take months rather than weeks, and the judge found that inpatient care significantly reduced the likelihood of suicide but could not eliminate the risk.

Despite acknowledging that publication would create a genuine and grave risk to the celebrity’s life, the judge refused to block the investigation.

He found that the proposed reporting concerned matters of “substantial public interest” and that the sweeping injunction sought would suppress the substance of the outlets’ journalism for a potentially indefinite period.

“For the reasons given in this judgment, the Claimant’s claim is therefore dismissed,” the judge wrote.

The judge stressed that he had not determined whether the sexual misconduct allegations were true.

The unnamed celebrity has denied the claims.
