1 week ago 11

If there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that college reunions are a mixed bag. You’re either excited to relive the glory days, or dreading the awkwardness of your old college crew trying to figure out who’s still relevant.

But what if your college reunion wasn’t just about catching up on old times? What if it was an epic event featuring a cast of lovable misfits, hilarious plot twists, and plenty of meta jokes? Oh, wait—are we talking about the Community movie? Well….yes, it’s finally happening!

After nearly a decade of obsessively refreshing social media, hoping for any scrap of news, that fateful day finally arrived. Indeed, the prophecy of “Six seasons and a movie” is officially happening. If you’re like us, you probably had to stop scrolling and double-check the date, because, let’s face it, we’ve all been burned by cancelled shows and empty promises before.

So, get ready for the ultimate reunion as we break down everything you need to know about the Community movie, from its release date to the beloved cast returning to Greendale!

A quick look back: What was Community show all about?

Before we dive headfirst into the Community movie madness, let’s take a fun, little detour down memory lane. Think of it as a warm-up lap, if you will.

Dan Harmon’s show was a kaleidoscope of chaos, pop culture references, and so many meta jokes. Set in the quirky, unpredictable world of Greendale Community College, the show didn’t just break the rules—it rewrote them, all while making us laugh ’til we cried.

The central character, Jeff Winger (played by Joel McHale), is a lawyer who’s suddenly thrown a curveball when his law degree is deemed invalid. Left with no choice, he ends up back in community college, where he forms a study group with a motley crew of characters, each more eccentric than the last.

The rest of the gang? A delightful mishmash of lovable misfits who, against all odds, somehow clicked like the perfect storm. We had Gillian Jacobs as Britta, who may have meant well but mostly messed things up with “I’m not like other girls” energy; Danny Pudi as Abed, who even bagged three nominations for the Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

We also saw Alison Brie in Annie’s role, Yvette Nicole Brown as Shirley, Donald Glover as Troy, Ken Jeong as the wildly unpredictable Ben Chang (who was definitely a little too unhinged for our taste), Chevy Chase as Pierce, and Jim Rash as the overly enthusiastic and always confusing Dean Craig Pelton.

In short, Community was the college experience we never had, but the one we wish we did. So, what will be the movie about?

What will the Community movie be about? Dan Harmon promises a fresh take!

Dan Harmon, the genius behind Community, made it clear that this upcoming movie won’t be about rehashing what’s been done before. Forget about diving into another paintball war or getting lost in a game of D&D for an hour. No, no. Harmon has bigger things in mind. He wants to ground the story and make it feel real. As he stated (via CBR):

Do we really think it’d be a good idea to be a paintball episode? It’s one of the first things to rule out because it’s the first thing off the top of your head, and that’s an issue with the Community movie concept.

So, while fans might have initially envisioned more of those signatures, over-the-top moments from past episodes, Harmon is taking it down a road that’s a little more, shall we say, grounded. And, honestly, that makes perfect sense.

Donald Glover also spilled some tantalizing details about what we can expect from the movie. He informed The Hollywood Reporter:

It’s a college reunion, but Abed [Danny Pudi’s character] is like this big director now, and basically this is his magnum opus. I’m like, ‘This sounds f***ing tight.’

Now, if you were a Community fan, you’d know that Abed’s journey has always been one of unexpected growth. From the quirky, meta-obsessed student we all loved to the production assistant heading to Hollywood, Abed was always destined for bigger things. And it looks like those dreams have come true. The movie will center around a college reunion, yes, but it’s also about a star — Abed, now a big-time director — pulling his friends back into his orbit for what might be his magnum opus.

And if we look back to the season 6 finale — Emotional Consequences of Broadcast Television — the seeds of this reunion were already sown. Jeff was grappling with the fear of being left behind as everyone moved on to new adventures. But in the end, it was Abed who took the plunge, heading to Los Angeles to work on film sets. Now, it’s up to him to bring Greendale’s finest back together!

Recent update: Dan Harmon confirms Community movie script is ‘almost done’

Some things just take time. Like a fine wine or the perfect friendship, good things are worth the wait — even when it feels like you’re stuck holding your breath. The Community movie is one of those things.

Earlier this year, Dan Harmon shared some insights about the Community movie in a chat with Variety, confirming that while the script is “almost done”,  it’s still far from the finish line:

I can confirm Donald Glover’s report that I told him the script was done. But I will also say Donald’s sources are so unreliable because the script is always ‘almost done’.

Then, in a bombshell update from the ever-charismatic Yvette Nicole Brown, we learned that her character Shirley Bennett is confirmed to return to the fold. During an interview with The Warp in October 2024, the actress shed some light on what’s really going down behind the scenes. She confirmed that she’d seen the full script, but there’s a catch: the final draft is still being tweaked.

For a minute, I wasn’t confirmed, so they have to now change some things, because I am confirmed, and they can now change some things for Shirley’s character as well.

Translation? Shirley’s back in action and her role is being adjusted to fit into the film’s evolving storyline. And, as Brown put it:

So it’s going to be really, it’s going to be a good time.

The script is in the works, and it seems like it’s going through more drafts than a freshly minted novel. Expect nothing less than perfection, even if it means keeping the cast and fans on their toes a little longer.

Who’s returning for the Community Movie? Here’s the cast lineup

Yes, most of our favorite Greendale grads are back in action for the Community movie. In fact, when Joel McHale first tweeted the announcement back in 2022, he tagged his co-stars. The excitement was palpable as the core cast—Jeff (Joel McHale), Abed (Danny Pudi), Annie (Alison Brie), Britta (Gillian Jacobs), Shirley (Yvette Nicole Brown), and Ben Chang (Ken Jeong)—confirmed they’d be back to reprise their roles:

And then there’s Donald Glover. Ah, Troy Barnes. In April 2023 it was confirmed he would also be returning. Glover’s return was up in the air for a while, mainly due to his packed schedule. But after much speculation, during his chat with GQ, he confirmed he’d be back in action, leaving fans of his character to celebrate.

The Community movie, there’s some progress on it. We’re supposed to be shooting it soon. Haven’t seen a script. In true Dan (Harmon) fashion, I’ll probably get it on the first day. But yeah, it’s supposed to be happening.

However, as much as we’d love to see everyone back, one key figure is definitely not coming back: Chevy Chase. His character, Pierce Hawthorne, met his unfortunate demise in the show, thus, his return is off the table.

Delays and the long road ahead: When will the Community movie be released?

They say patience is a virtue, but let’s be real—waiting for the Community movie to hit the screen is starting to feel like waiting for a bus that never seems to come. Joel McHale had us thinking that the movie would start filming in 2023.

In an interview with Collider, McHale himself acknowledged that filming, originally pegged to start in the summer of last year, has been indefinitely delayed.

I’m not exactly sure, but I’m guessing it’s not going to start on time.

And while that news was a gut-punch for fans, he made it clear he stood behind the WGA writers’ strike, supporting their call for fair compensation. “Pay has gone down 23% since 2007, and that needs to change,” he pointed out, sending a clear message that writers deserved their due.

While the delay was frustrating, McHale remained upbeat about the future of the film. During his June 2023 interview with TVLine, he informed:

That was a bummer, because we were getting very close….When this strike is over, we’ll come back and we’ll make it. I’m sure Dan Harmon will put in 12 jokes addressing the fact it took this long to come together, but we’ll get there.

So, while it may not be moving at the speed we all hoped, the cast and crew are still determined to get the project across the finish line. Plus, we learned from The Wrap that Community movie’s budget sits at $16.3 million.

There’s more good news on the horizon. As of December 2023, McHale was back to being hopeful. “We shot it, we shot it yesterday. Great. Uh, yeah, it only took a few hours. I couldn’t believe it,” he joked (via Collider).

The truth is, the Community movie is still very much in the cards, but it’s going to take its sweet time to align everyone’s schedules. The script is expected to be finalized by the end of 2024, with filming likely kicking off in 2025.

So, mark your calendars, because the Greendale gang is gearing up for their big-screen return.

Will it top the show’s high points? Who’s to say? Only time will tell. But if you’ve been with Community this long, this movie is going to hit you right in the feels, bring on the nostalgia, and serve up a whole lot of laughs. Just like college life—except with fewer term papers and way more meta humor.

Community show is currently streaming on Peacock Premium.
