Filmmaker Colin Trevorrow was the original choice to direct the third and final installment of the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Trevorrow’s original plans for Star Wars: Episode IX were scrapped after the director exited the project, leading to J.J. Abrams’ return with The Rise of the Skywalker, becoming one of the most divisive entries in the space opera saga.

However, the concept art from Trevorrow’s abandoned third installment, tentatively titled Duel of the Fates, offers a look at what could’ve been. The concept art gives glimpses of Kylo Ren learning a new Force ability while John Boyega’s Finn goes on an incredible arc that would make fans scream, especially given his poor treatment in the final film.

Colin Trevorrow’s Scrapped Star Wars Episode 9 Gave Kylo Ren New Force Power and Dark Side Master

In August 2015, Colin Trevorrow was announced as the director of Star Wars Episode 9, which would conclude the sequel trilogy. However, Trevorrow’s original plans were scrapped after the director exited the project in 2017, having completed a rough draft for his movie, titled Duel of the Fates.

Leaked concept art from Trevorrow’s version of the movie has surfaced on social media, which reveals several key plot points. According to one of the images, the film would have seen the primary antagonist Kylo Ren, played by Adam Driver, searching for a new master to teach him more about the Force’s dark side.

In the leaked draft of Trevorrow’s script, the master is referred to as Tor Valum, who would’ve been revealed as the master of Emperor Palpatine’s master Darth Plagueis. Valum would have then taught Ren the ability to drain the life force, which he would have used to kill the master before using it during his fated duel against Rey on Mortis.

Colin Trevorrow’s Star Wars Episode 9‘s Treatment of John Boyega’s Finn Will Give Fans Nightmares

While Kylo Ren’s new ability is in itself a surprising addition to the sequel trilogy’s story, it wasn’t the biggest missed opportunity. Instead, that honor goes to Finn’s arc in the third and final installment. According to the concept art, Finn, played by John Boyega would have been at the center of the uprising on Coruscant.

In the final film, Finn had very little to do other than cry out for Rey’s help. The character started as a former stormtrooper, giving him one of the most interesting setups for a character arc. However, his arc was completely butchered because Rian Johnson mishandled the character in The Last Jedi.

Furthermore, The Rise of Skywalker rendered Finn practically useless in the final battle. In contrast, Trevorrow’s concept art and leaked script confirm that Finn would have been the key figure in Coruscant’s uprising against the First Order, completing his character from rebelling against them to leading an entire rebellion. As a result, the lost opportunity will certainly give fans nightmares over what could’ve been.
