A blue teddy bear was propped on the ledge of the boarded-up CuTzz Barber Salon in Vanier on Thursday, two days after a collision left one man dead and another seriously injured when a car reportedly backed into the business.

The City of Ottawa confirmed in a statement to the Ottawa Citizen that the collision on Tuesday afternoon involved an off-duty city employee, though the statement did not clarify how that individual was involved.

“The matter is currently under police investigation, and the city is fully co-operating with the authorities,” Clara Freire, general manager of the city’s community and social services department, wrote in the statement.

The Ottawa Police Service announced Wednesday that a 57-year-old woman had been arrested for impaired driving in connection with the collision that left a 30-year-old man dead and a 32-year-old man with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

Centre éducatif Tournesol, a City of Ottawa-operated daycare located directly across the street from the barber salon on McArthur Avenue, will remain closed for the remainder of the week, “to provide children, families and staff time to process this tragic event and access available supports,” according to Freire.

The 57-year-old woman was scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.

Police are seeking witnesses and ask anyone with information or who may have cameras on their properties or home, or dashcam video that may have captured the incident, to come forward.
