EDITORIAL: CBC rewards hatred and punishes victims

Neil Herland has been disciplined and told he’s under investigation.

It’s almost as if the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) is hell-bent on making itself irrelevant and this country the laughingstock of the Western world.

Hot on the heels of a diktat by a CBC paper-pusher that reporters were not to refer to the terror attacks on Sept. 11, 2001 as terror, without attribution to an official source, comes another jaw-dropping decision by the state broadcaster. A Jewish reporter has been pulled off-air for recording a vile pro-Palestinian demonstration outside a venue that was being used for Yom Kippur services and posting it on his private social media account.

Postmedia columnist Warren Kinsella reported this week that Neil Herland, an award-winning CBC journalist, took out his phone to record a group of protesters gathered outside Meridian Centre in Toronto, which was being used as a synagogue for Yom Kippur services. A large crowd was expected to hear a guest speaker.

As the reporter approached, the crowd hurled vile epithets such as “baby killer” at worshippers. One masked protester, using a bullhorn, repeatedly yelled, “You’re going to hell.” Another protester called a woman attending the event “a fat Jewish bitch.”

Yes, this is Canada in 2026.

When Islamists shut down busy intersections to use as “prayer rooms,” calling it freedom of religion, police look the other way. Yet Jews seeking to observe their holiest day in a private space are not extended that same freedom of worship. CBC couldn’t care less.

Herland, who was not working at the time, has since been disciplined and told he’s under investigation. So much for his freedom of speech and freedom to worship.

This tone-deaf censure by CBC of a Jewish reporter couldn’t have come at a worse time. Belleville, Ontario, police chief Murray Rodd revealed that this week’s attack on a synagogue there could have been far worse had it not been thwarted by two police officers, one of whom was seriously injured. The gunman screamed, “You’re going to die for Jews,” as he attacked the cop. His car contained containers of gasoline and enough weaponry to turn the attack into a mass casualty event, said Rodd.

Once again, CBC uses bully boy tactics to protect the perpetrators of hatred. The victims get punished.
