Actress Chloe Cherry, known for her role in the series Euphoria, has sparked conversation after offering direct criticism of the evolution of some storylines in the HBO Max production.
Cherry, who joined the series in its second season, commented in a recent interview with Refinery29 about her views on the representation of sex work in contemporary fiction.
Sydney Sweeney's Euphoria scene sparks debate over direction
His statements come at a time when the series is back in the media spotlight for the development of its main characters in the third season.
Chloe Cherry criticizes the series from within: "It feels fucking crazy to see someone who lives like Cassie resorting to sex work"
The actress questions the idea that sex work can automatically be interpreted as a form of empowerment. In her words, she points out that there is a social perception built around high-profile media cases that do not reflect, in her view, the reality of the phenomenon."I literally just think these things are a bit of smoke and mirrors," Cherry says, referring to the public perception of working on digital platforms. She also adds: "I don't even really understand what it means to be on OnlyFans, honestly, I don't even know what people are doing there," underlining her critical view of the idealization of the phenomenon.
Cherry points out that this view is influenced by economic and social factors, linked to the context of capitalism and the global economic situation, rather than a narrative of personal empowerment."That's why people are turning to it," the actress says, referring to the boom in these platforms over the past decade.Regarding the character of Cassie, played by Sydney Sweeney, the actress expresses her surprise at the plot twist, pointing out the tension between fiction and reality that the series raises: "She's extremely attractive, so it would probably make her a lot of money. But it feels fucking crazy to see someone who lives like Cassie resorting to sex work. It's like, 'holy shit, is that where we are as a society?'".
