Butters the dog ‘eager on the leash’ but otherwise pretty perfect

This five-year-old female mixed breed dog, available at the Toronto Humane Society, likes to go for walks so be prepared

There’s no need to butter anyone up when it comes to adopting Butters, a five-year-old female mixed breed dog available at the Toronto Humane Society since arriving in August.

According to Toronto Humane Society spokesperson Lucas Solowey, she’s a winner but does have a lot of energy.

“She’s pretty sweet and she’s a cutie,” Solowey said. “She’s affectionate. She’s fun-loving. She’s energetic. She loves being outdoors and would enjoy plenty of opportunities for exercise and play. She gets excited when she sees other dogs and shows interest in engaging with them in play.”

“She’s curious, enthusiastic on walks, enjoys leading the way, and stopping to sniff and explore. From what we’ve seen she’s been great with both people and pets, but I don’t have a specific age (for children), but I think she’d been good. We’ve received good feedback on her and we’ve only seen the best behaviour from her so far,” he added.

There’s only one drawback. Butters can be a little TOO enthusiastic.

“She can be eager on the leash, particularly at the beginning of an outing,” Solowey said. “And then after getting some energy out she settles into a very affectionate companion who enjoys attention and connection. I’d say really good behaviour that she’s shown with other pets and people but she can be energetic so maybe a bit of a harness to handle that excitement if she’s pulling.”

Anyone with energy is good for this doggie

Otherwise, Butters is in good medical health and wants to stay that way.

“Ideally an active home that can provide regular walks, outdoor adventures, play and enrichment,” Solowey said of her ideal Forever home.

“At this phase she is fairly energetic, so someone who can provide consistent routines and guidance. We do recommend a supportive harness that may help manage her enthusiasm on walks. And then continued positive reinforcement around leash walking would help her develop calmer walking habits. I think with a bit more training and treats and maybe the harness that would make things go even smoother.”

NOTE:Paws in the Park presented by Amazon on Aug. 15 raised $147,515.27 in support of Toronto Humane Society, far surpassing its $80,000 fundraising goal. Also, 49 pets were adopted and an additional 26 pets were placed on hold during the event.
