The Brunswick Creek wildfire near Boston Bar continued to grow exponentially on Monday, leading to an air quality warning for the eastern part of the Fraser Valley.

The initially small, human-caused fire was spotted on July 2 and has exploded in size to about 12 square kilometres in the Fraser Canyon.

Four evacuation orders have been issued in the area by the Fraser Valley Regional District, Boothroyd Indian Band and, most recently, the Boston Bar Indian Band, and there is also one evacuation alert as of Monday evening.

A yellow air quality warning was issued by Metro Vancouver for Chilliwack, Agassiz and Hope on Monday afternoon.

A yellow warning means there is a high health risk from particulate matter and people in the area are advised to limit outdoor activity, keep indoor air clean by closing windows and doors, and seek out places with air conditioning if their home is smoky or hot.

“This wildfire has grown in size, and smoke travelled down the Fraser Canyon into the eastern Fraser Valley overnight,” said Metro Vancouver in the alert. “Onshore flow of cleaner air is expected to help clear the air through the day.”

There are 21 active wildfires across B.C. as of Monday at 8 p.m. Five fires have sparked in the past 24 hours while nine have been declared out.

The Brunswick Creek fire is the only one considered a wildfire of note. However, after a weekend of hot, dry weather, winds are expected to pick up across the province this week and drought continues to be a concern.
