Nicknamed the “King,” Guramrit Sidhu was sentenced on Thursday to 20 years in a federal penitentiary for leading a criminal organization that – during a five week-plus span – trafficked hundreds of kilograms of methamphetamine and cocaine from the United States into Canada. The total value of the drugs was worth up to US$17 million.
“After buying the bulk quantities of cocaine and methamphetamine in the U.S., Sidhu arranged for the narcotics’ transportation into Canada via long-haul semi-trucks for further distribution,” read a release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Central District of California.
“Sidhu provided telephone numbers and serial numbers on bills of currency for couriers to use as a ‘token’ for identification purposes during the delivery and transportation of the cocaine and methamphetamine.”
On March 26, Sidhu pleaded guilty to one count of engaging in a continuing criminal enterprise. He has been in federal custody since October 2024.

How much drugs were trafficked in a month?
From Sept. 13, 2022, to Oct. 24, 2022, Sidhu orchestrated the distribution of eight separate drug loads, totalling approximately 523 kilograms of methamphetamine and 347 kilograms of cocaine. The district attorney’s office said Sidhu and his co-conspirators then retrieved the drugs from locations within Canada for further distribution.
Sidhu was arrested in January 2024. The RCMP extradited him to the U.S. to face charges.
U.S. officials noted that Sidhu is the seventh defendant to plead guilty. Others have been sentenced to federal prison terms ranging from more than two years to nine years.
Sidhu was at the apex of a syndicate with deep ties to former Olympian-turned-alleged drug lord Ryan Wedding. The Thunder Bay native relied on Punjabi truckers and trucking companies to bring the drugs into Canada.
