Well before Saturday’s opening pitch was tossed in the second game of a three-game series against the visiting Cleveland Guardians, who took the opener 8-6 by jumping on starter Max Scherzer, the club announced it had moved Lukes to the 10-day injured list.

The hard-luck Lukes, a major revelation last season, began this season battling vertigo.
He entered Friday night on a tear, but along comes this setback.
Lukes was injured while heading to second base following a leadoff double, his 11th hit in his past 21 at-bats.
He joins an injured list that includes other position players George Springer, Addison Barger and Alejandro Kirk.
When Springer fractured his big toe on a foul tip, the Jays began using Ernie Clement and Lukes in the leadoff spot in the lineup.
Neither has Springer’s pedigree, but the good news is the veteran is progressing well.
With Lukes moving to the IL, the Jays called up outfielder Yohendrick Pinango.
According to MLB Pipeline, the 23-year-old is the Jays’ 10th-ranked prospect. Pinango was active for Saturday’s game.
In triple-A this season, Pinango appeared in 22 games with the Buffalo Bisons, going deep three times with 13 RBI, while posting an .858 OPS.
To be able to add Pinango to the team’s 40-man roster, the Jays transferred RHP Yimi Garcia to the 60-day IL.
Eventually, and hopefully, the Jays will one day be close to fielding their ideal lineup.
Having said that, this might easily turn out to be the year when the injury bug will continue to bite the Jays, who are the reigning AL champions in name only.
Toronto entered Saturday’s play second-last in the AL East.
