The Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Dodgers, who played a classic World Series last fall, eventually won in seven games by the Dodgers, exchanged minor league pitchers on Tuesday.

The Jays acquired 6-foot-6 right-hander Jose Rodriguez in exchange for another righty with the same surname, Sebastian Rodriguez.

Toronto’s acquisition is a 25-year-old who has posted a 3.38 ERA at triple-A Oklahoma City this season. He has struck out 36 in 29.1 innings, showing pretty good control for the second year in a row there with at least twice the number of strikeouts as walks. Last year he went 8-2 with a 4.71 ERA at Oklahoma City and 64 strikeouts in 42 innings. Rodriguez has gone from allowing seven home runs at triple-A last season to only one so far. His changeup is said to be a good one.

Jose Rodriguez returned from an ACL injury suffered late last season. Per Dodgers blog Truebluela.com, he’s had a number of long relief appearances resulting in saves (three to as many as five innings) and was a candidate to be claimed in the Rule 5 draft last year and perhaps again this winter, perhaps prompting Los Angeles to move on.

Teams made deal earlier this season

The teams got together on a deal earlier this season with Eric Lauer heading to Los Angeles.

Deals can still be made at this point of the season involving players not on 40-man rosters.

It’s possible the Jays’ newest pitcher could be called up before the end of the year, but he would need to be added to the 40-man roster.

Sebastian Rodriguez just turned 20 and has pitched in the Dominican Summer League, where the new Blue Jay started out.

The Jays start a large series against the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday hoping to get to a wild card spot.

The team is coming off a sweep of the Seattle Mariners, another playoff opponent from last season.

The season had appeared lost, but now looks like it might be interesting all the way to the end.
