B.C. drivers nabbed going 100 km/h over the speed limit — and one was drunk with kids in the car

Two B.C. drivers, one of whom failed a roadside sobriety test and had kids in the car, were clocked recently going upwards of 100 km/h over the posted speed limit.

A 37-year-old Vancouver man was pulled over on Saturday by a Maple Ridge RCMP officer conducting speed enforcement in the 25200-block of Lougheed Highway.

His white Tesla was caught on radar going 191 km/h in an 80 km/h zone. Seemingly impaired, he failed a breathalyzer test.

The man was given a 90-day driving prohibition and a $483 ticket for excessive speeding. His vehicle was impounded and he’ll have to pay towing and storage fees, and his insurance will go up because of a high-risk driver premium.

“In situations like this, RoadSafetyBC can impose further driving sanctions such as an ignition interlock device being installed in the vehicle and/or completion of the responsible driver program,” said police in a news release issued Wednesday.

Contact was also made with the Ministry of Children and Family Development regarding the safety of the children.

“The driver advised that he was heading home after spending all day at his children’s extracurricular activities,” said Maple Ridge RCMP Sgt. Joe Whalley. “Instead, his family had to find an alternative way home and got to see first-hand the consequences of excessive speeding and impaired driving. We’re thankful that things didn’t turn out worse than they did.”

Earlier, on April Fools’ Day no less, a 29-year-old man from Coldstream lost his muscle car for a week after being clocked at 207 km/h in a 110 km/h zone on Highway 97C near Elkhart in the Okanagan.

“That’s obviously a dangerous speed, and nowhere near the already generous speed limit,” said Cpl. Michael McLaughlin of the B.C. RCMP highway patrol. “This traffic stop was made even more dangerous because the driver failed to pull over to the right.”

When the driver stopped on the left of the divided highway, he put himself and the police officer in the path of the fastest and most dangerous traffic on the road, said McLaughlin.

The driver of the black Dodge Challenger also got an excessive speeding ticket of $483, must pay the costs of a tow and seven-day impound, and will be hit with higher insurance premiums that could add up to a total cost of about $2,500.

“We’re glad that no one was hurt, because at these kinds of speeds, collisions lead to fatalities,” said McLaughlin. “We would like to remind drivers to slow down. And if you do get stopped by police, remember to pull to the curb lane.”
