Who Is Vaatu in Avatar Lore?

Vaatu made his debut in The Legend of Korra Book Two: Spirits as one of the two primordial spirits that have existed since the beginning of time. Whereas Raava is the spirit of light and order, Vaatu is the embodiment of darkness and chaos. The two together ensure that balance exists in the universe of the Avatar through an eternal cycle of conflict.

Once every 10,000 years, at Harmonic Convergence, Raava and Vaatu wage their battle. When Raava wins, harmony is maintained for the next ten thousand years. However, when Vaatu wins, the world is plunged into chaos and darkness.

Vaatu is also endowed with powers that no spirit has ever had in the franchise. He has the ability to corrupt other spirits and turn harmless, peaceful beings into violent monsters. Additionally, he has the capability to influence both the Spirit World and the physical world. All this to say that he is one of the greatest existential threats the Avatar world has ever faced.

Even though some fans complained that the existence of Vaatu gives a more conventional light-versus-darkness dynamic than seen in previous Avatar stories, the importance of this character in developing the mythology of the franchise cannot be denied.

Vaatu’s Battle With Raava Created the Avatar Cycle

Wan (the very first Avatar) was trapped in the never-ending conflict between Raava and Vaatu, ten thousand years prior to the setting of Avatar: The Last Airbender. During Harmonic Convergence, Wan merged with Raava forever, and he became the very first Avatar, bringing together human and Spirit of Light in order to confine Vaatu inside the Tree of Time. This fusion laid down the groundwork for the Avatar Cycle. As Raava reincarnates along with every new Avatar, each of their successors gains the ability to bend all four elements as well as communicate with their previous incarnations.

Vaatu was never completely destroyed, though. Light and darkness cannot destroy each other forever because there is a bit of darkness in light and vice versa. As mentioned earlier, Avatar Studios has not confirmed Vaatu’s inclusion in Avatar: Seven Havens, which is canon to the Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise, but the ending shot of the teaser introduces a mystery red-and-black diamond-shaped figure with a glowing yellow spot at its center (via YouTube). This is what fans think looks similar to the Spirit of Chaos introduced in The Legend of Korra.

Moreover, it matches the storyline since the protagonist, Pavi, lives in a universe that holds Avatar responsible for the cataclysmic event. In addition, the appearance of Korra in the teaser suggests that she will play a vital role in the new animated TV series. Given the fact that Vaatu changed the Avatar cycle and is an embodiment of chaos itself, he might have something to do with the cataclysm.
