Aston Villa news: Six stats prove Nicolas Jackson is out of Ollie Watkins shadow, over Enzo Maresca snub

Saturday day indispensable person felt peculiarly saccharine to Nicolas Jackson. Not lone did helium assistance Aston Villa supporters determination connected from Ollie Watkins, helium served a reminder to Enzo Maresca that helium was incorrect to extremity his vocation astatine Chelsea.

His 2nd extremity successful beforehand of a dishevelled and deserted North Stand made the quality astatine Villa Park arsenic Unai Emery's broadside inflicted Manchester City's archetypal Premier League defeat of the season.

Yet, it was the mode successful which helium calmly stepped wrong Elliot Anderson and rifled the shot into the extortion of Gianluigi Donnarumma's nett for his archetypal that truly cemented his presumption among a fanbase who, justifiably, felt that they had overspent connected a subordinate who they deemed not to beryllium successful the people of their departing legendary striker Watkins.

Reuniting with Emery - his brag astatine Villarreal - has created a zen-like persona successful Jackson, adjacent though determination is inactive a feeling that helium plays connected the edge. His opening 45 minutes against Nottingham Forest earlier successful the play proved that.

Such was Jackson's quality astatine Chelsea it was not beyond the realms of anticipation that helium could person produced an Emmanuel Adebayor knee-slide successful beforehand of his erstwhile caput coach. Instead, the quickly-maturing 25-year-old offered his riposte to the biggest snub of his vocation done a man-of-the-match performance.

Jackson present has 7 goals from 11 Villa appearances. He is exceeding expectations with his instrumentality successful beforehand of goal, yet determination are galore underlying statistic which emphasise wherefore Watkins should not needfully beryllium missed astatine Villa and however Maresca was not the close manager for Jackson.

How is Jackson out-performing Watkins astatine Aston Villa?

To those relying connected highlights packages to ticker Villa games, each they volition spot is Jackson's contributions successful the last third, but it is possibly his enactment distant from extremity that is the astir invaluable plus to Emery.

As per Fotmob, Jackson is producing 19.6 sprints per 90 minutes for Villa successful the Premier League. That could summation oregon alteration implicit time, but by comparison, Watkins was down astatine 13.8 sprints per 90 minutes successful 2025-26.

Meanwhile, Jackson is averaging 2.5 palmy dribbles per 90 minutes successful the 2026-27 Premier League. It is the highest for a striker successful the division. Watkins ended 2025-26 with an mean of 0.8 per 90 minutes and sitting 15th successful the database of strikers.

The xA (expected assists) volition summation implicit the people of a season, but Jackson is presently connected 0.9 and 4th successful the database of strikers for that category. Watkins concluded past play down successful 17th position.

In presumption of region covered per 90 minutes, Jackson and Watkins are highly akin (10.4km to 10.3km). That would suggest that Jackson has rapidly appreciated - helped by their Villarreal days - what Emery demands of his fig nine.

As good arsenic Jackson's moving statistics, determination are numbers which bespeak that Emery is acold much appreciative of however his £65m signing is astir apt to lend to goals than his erstwhile managers.

Jackson oregon Maresca to blasted for Chelsea issues?

There are reasons wherefore Maresca volition ne'er regret dumping Jackson from his Chelsea squad. His reddish paper against Flamengo astatine the Club World Cup - not agelong aft 1 astatine Newcastle United successful the Premier League - felt similar the last straw.

Jackson had besides failed to shingle a estimation of often squandering chances wrong the punishment area. Across his archetypal 2 seasons astatine Chelsea nether Mauricio Pochettino and Maresca, helium underperformed from an xG position by 6.9 goals.

In the abbreviated abstraction of clip that helium has worked with Emery astatine Villa, helium is overperforming by 2 goals. Again, specified statistic tin fluctuate implicit the people of a season, but it opens up the statement of whether Jackson was getting into the close spaces nether erstwhile bosses.

Maturity and having a play astatine Bayern Munich to hone his trade alongside Harry Kane should besides beryllium considered, yet it is Emery, oregon his playing style, who is helping make the astir encouraging numbers.

When you look astatine the magnitude of assists successful Jackson's career, helium has 22 crossed 174 matches for Villarreal, Chelsea, Bayern and Villa. Essentially 1 assistance each 8 appearances.

He ranked eighth and 10th respectively for expected assists for strikers successful his 2 seasons astatine Chelsea, but helium sits successful 4th successful 7 Premier League games for Villa.

Furthermore, his palmy dribbles per 90 minutes nether Emery is 3.5 times higher (2.5 to 0.7) than it was nether Maresca astatine Chelsea. If determination is simply a statistic which highlights however Maresca's benignant of play did not acceptable with Jackson's strengths, this is it.

Villa fans should not get excessively carried distant with Jackson's start. This remains a subordinate who has lone ever scored successful 3 successive Premier League matches connected 1 juncture crossed 72 appearances successful the division.

At the aforesaid time, if Jackson tin grounds 15 goals/assists successful 30 Premier League games nether idiosyncratic successful Maresca who yet did not sufficiently judge successful him, what could helium execute nether idiosyncratic who does?
