Applications will open on Oct. 1 for more B.C. daycares to participate in the $10-a-day child care program.

The program, which is funded through a federal agreement, offers families affordable daycare that costs approximately $10 a day or $200 a month.

On average, families pay $1,120 a month for full-time, centre-based care.

“We will be delivering even more $10-a-day spaces to B.C. families because we know what a difference these spaces make,” said B.C.’s Minister of Education Rachna Singh in a statement.

“By making child care more affordable, families are able to pursue more opportunities, which will benefit everyone.”

The program is open to all licensed child-care providers, though priority is given to larger non-profit and Indigenous-run programs caring for children age 5 and younger. Providers in communities with no or very few $10-a-day spaces are also prioritized.

Applications open Oct. 1 and close at noon on Oct. 31, 2024.

To date, just over 15,000 $10-a-day child care spots have been created throughout B.C. since the provincial-federal child care agreement was established.

The latest round of applications will expand the program to 20,000 spots by mid-2026.

In addition to $10-a-day child care, B.C. also offers the affordable child care benefit, which helps providers to lower their fees, and the child care fee reduction initiative, which is an income-tested fee subsidy that is paid directly to the provider on behalf of the family.
