American Idol 24 Finale Theme: 3-Hour Night Loaded With Guest Performances
Jordan McCulloughAmerican Idol Season 24 finale was designed as a three-hour television event, and ABC did not exactly arrive empty-handed. Before the episode aired, the show announced on Instagram that several major names across genres would appear, including Alicia Keys, Brad Paisley, Blues Traveler, Gin Blossoms, Cameron Whitcomb, Clay Aiken, En Vogue, Jason Mraz, Lee Ann Womack, Mötley Crüe, Nelly, Shinedown and Tori Kelly.
That guest list made the finale feel less like a standard results night and more like a victory lap for the entire season. The Top 3 still had to sing for the crown, but the show also gave viewers a broader celebration of Idol history, current music and the finalists’ growth.

Round 1, Alicia Keys Tribute: Finalists Rework Keys Songbook
Jordan McCulloughFor the first round, Keys mentored each finalist as they selected songs from her catalogue. It was a clever test, because Keys songs are deceptively difficult. They need restraint, soul, technique and a singer who can carry emotion without overselling it.
Harper Performs No One
She dedicated the performance to her husband and thanked him for supporting her dreams.
Richardson Performs Unthinkable
Richardson chose Keys’s Unthinkable and adjusted the song’s build with help from Keys herself, tailoring it more closely to her voice.
McCullough Performs If I Ain’t Got You
McCullough ended the round with If I Ain’t Got You. Keys called his staging “really fun,” and Richie agreed with that excitement, saying the performance was not just “money” but his “career.”
Round 2, Hometown Songs: Finalists Bring Their Roots to the Idol Stage
Keyla RichardsonThe second round took the contestants back to where their stories began. Each finalist returned home for behind-the-scenes footage and then performed a song tied to that personal journey.
Harper Honors Willow Springs, Missouri
Harper, from Willow Springs, Missouri, performed her original song Married Into This Town.
Richardson Honors Pensacola, Florida
Richardson, from Pensacola, Florida, performed Whitney Houston’s I Love the Lord.
McCullough Honors Murfreesboro, Tennessee
McCullough, from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, chose Smokie Norful’s Dear God. Bryan was stunned by the force in McCullough’s voice.
First Finale Elimination: Richardson Finishes In Third Place
Keyla RichardsonAfter the first two rounds, Seacrest revealed that voting would be paused. The contestant sitting in third place would leave the competition immediately, narrowing the finale down to the Top 2. Richardson was eliminated at this stage, leaving Harper and McCullough to compete in the final round.
It was a tough cut, especially after Richardson’s commanding run through the season, but finale math rarely has a soft heart. Her exit was followed by several celebrity guest performances and duets with the Top 10 contestants before Harper and McCullough returned for their last solo performances.
Round 3, Song Redos: Harper And McCullough Make Their Final Case
Hannah HarperFor the last competitive round, Harper and McCullough revisited songs that had helped define their Idol journeys. Harper performed String Cheese, the original song she had used during her audition. The choice brought her story full circle, giving viewers a reminder of the emotional clarity that made her stand out early in the season.
McCullough followed with The Goodness of God, a song he had performed earlier in the competition. Seacrest reminded viewers that his original rendition had earned him his first standing ovation, so the redo carried real weight.
