The Rings of Power Season 3 Confirms Release Date: What’s Next for Sauron in LOTR Saga?

The Rings of Power will be returning with Season 3 on November 11, 2026. The Lord of the Rings prequel show will see a time skip that jumps several years into the peak of the War between the Elves and Sauron (via Amazon MGM Studios).

The show has amassed 185 million viewers since its debut, making it one of Prime Video’s biggest shows. The beloved source material by J.R.R. Tolkien has one of the biggest fanbases for a fantasy IP, propelled by Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings movie trilogy.

The prequel show is set thousands of years before The Hobbit, presenting the rise of Middle-earth we’ve come to love. As Season 3 beckons, what can we expect about the release?

The Rings of Power Season 3 Global Release Details

The Rings of Power will debut exclusively on Prime Video on November 11, 2026, in more than 240 countries and territories across the world simultaneously for a global release. The show will be available in multiple languages, bringing back its iconic cast.

If patterns are to continue, we can expect at least two episodes to drop. Season 1 dropped with two episodes on its release day, and Season 2 dropped with three episodes simultaneously.

As for the timings, Season 2 released its episodes at 12 AM PT (3 AM ET). Therefore, Season 3 could likely follow the same schedule, though Prime Video hasn’t confirmed it yet. As such, viewers will have to wait for an official update regarding the exact release timings.

Moreover, each season so far has had 8 episodes, with weekly drops on Thursdays, so it remains to be seen if Season 3 follows the same route. Notably, filming for Season 3 of The Rings of Power wrapped in December 2025. Many familiar faces will be returning, including new cast members like Jamie Campbell Bower and Eddie Marsan.

Which Lord of the Rings Saga Will The Rings of Power Season 3 Adapt?

Season 3 of The Rings of Power is positioned as Sauron’s plan to complete the One Ring to Rule Them All. The ring is known for corrupting its user while granting immense powers, as seen in the Lord of the Rings films. The synopsis for Season 3 goes as follows (Amazon MGM Studios Press):

Jumping forward several years from the events of Season two, Season three takes place at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, as the Dark Lord seeks to craft the One Ring that will give him the edge he needs to win the war, bind all peoples to his will – and at last rule all Middle-earth.

The storyline has been shifted, diverting away from Tolkien’s The Silmarillion. Rather than the war being set after the Ring has been crafted, we will see heavy conflict take place while Sauron prepares the Master Ring.

The battle known as The War of the Elves and Sauron will be adapted in this new timeline, potentially to the ire of hardcore fans. The Elves and Sauron will fight one another during the Battle of the Gwathló. The Rings of Power has done this before, shifting pieces of the Second Age timeline for Prime Video.

We do not know if the studio plans to combine this war with the one we are familiar with at the start of The Fellowship of the Ring. Prime Video will end the series as part of a five-season plan, leaving Season 3 as a game-changer as the show moves towards its endgame (via Empire).
