Aegon’s Conquest: Everything We Know About Game of Thrones Prequel Movie

Every day, we hear about new Game of Thrones prequels with no real confirmation. But for once, we know that we’re finally about to have a movie! News of the film’s development was announced last month, and at the recent CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas, Warner Bros. revealed the title: Aegon’s Conquest (via Variety).

All Game of Thrones prequels have been appreciated by fans so far, with only some disapproval for HoTD season 2 for its pacing. But A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms restored many people’s faith in the franchise, and now viewers are more than eager to see House of the Dragon season 3. But what is Aegon’s Conquest? What Is Aegon’s Conquest Prequel Movie Based on? 

Aegon’s Conquest will be based on Aegon I Targaryen, aka Aegon the Conqueror, the first king of the Seven Kingdoms. Though there is no dedicated book that only details his adventures, Fire and Blood goes into his history, plus the fall of the Targaryen dynasty (via Variety). 

There are three main chapters directly dedicated to Aegon I, which focus on his conquest, his reign, and the way he governed, followed by more material on his sons, and then a bit about himself. But that isn’t nearly enough for a whole script, so Warner Bros. will need to hire someone to write a proper and impressive screenplay. 

Who’s Creating the Game of Thrones Prequel Film?

And turns out, they’ve already done that! House of Cards showrunner Beau Willimon will be writing the script for Aegon’s Conquest. In March 2026, there was news of him submitting the first draft (via Page Six), and now, after the title announcement, it seems like he’s still a part of the project (via Variety). He’s also written a few episodes of Andor, the beloved Star Wars show, which makes him the perfect candidate to write a large-scale, political epic! 

Does Aegon’s Conquest Have a Release Date?

While we don’t have an official release date yet, Aegon’s Conquest was presented in Warner Bros.’ “2027 and beyond” projects (via Variety). So, there’s still a lot of time before we see the prequel movie, and until then, shows like House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will build all the momentum the franchise needs. 

What You Should Know About Aegon the Conqueror

There are like 23493 Aegons in the Game of Thrones saga, but we’re talking about the very first one, who everyone else was named after. He was born into House Targaryen on Dragonstone, after they fled Valyria due to prophetic dreams and visions about the civilization’s downfall. 

Aegon was trained as a warrior and rode Balerion the Black Dread. He married his sisters, Visenya and Rhaenys, and together, they united the seven independent kingdoms. We often hear about “Aegon’s Dream” in the shows, which refers to his prophetic visions about a terrible threat from the North, which ties directly into the White Walkers storyline (successfully ruined in the Game of Thrones show).
