attack on titan

SUMMARY

  • Chapter 100 of Attack on Titan can easily be one of the most horrifying chapter of the entire series.
  • Hajime Isayama's skills as an artist and storyteller came to play and the scene in which Eren crushed Willy Tybur is enough to give anyone goosebumps.
  • While MAPPA did a great job at adapting the chapter into the anime, the grittiness of Isayama's art was still missing.

Hajime Isayama might be a sadist wreaking havoc on the minds of Attack on Titan fans, but no one can deny the creativity of the author. For years, Isayama has written one spine-chilling chapter after another for his masterpiece series, but one of them stands apart in terms of horror and impact.

Before the release of this specific chapter, Isayama was considered a great writer, but after the chapter was released, fans realized what a mastermind he was. Especially since the chapter in question can make anyone shake in fear and anticipation.

Hajime Isayama debuted the Attack on Titan manga in September 2009 and it ran till April 2021, receiving a total of 139 chapters. During its run, the manga became known for its gory plot and merciless killing of fan-favorite characters. But if one chapter stood out from the rest of its peers, it would be chapter 100 titled “Declaration of War.”

Chapter 100 showed Willy Tybur giving his grand speech to a huge audience filled with Marleyans, Eldians, and representatives from different countries. However, a flashback revealed that Willy and Magath had planned to dispose of Eldian officers by putting them in the arena, in case an attack happened. Willy was willing to serve as bait just to assume the role of a victim and gain sympathy if an unseen attack happened.

Needless to say, Willy didn’t live too long to act like a victim. As he finishes his speech by urging everyone to join him in the fight against Eldians, Eren transforms and his Titan form emerges from a building behind him. Next, Eren crushes Willy and throws him into the air to devour him. The chapter had extremely good storytelling and the final panels reminded fans that Hajime Isayama is actually a top-notch artist.

The suspense built throughout the Marleyan arc paid off in a single chapter which led fans to sit on the edge of their seats. The images were graphic and the stage that was set for Willy to inspire people to join against Eldians became Eren’s declaration of war instead.

The Attack on Titan Anime Couldn’t Do Chapter 100 of the Manga Justice

Chapter 100 of the Attack on Titan manga was adapted into Episode 5 of the anime’s Season 4 Part 1. The episode showed the evil plot of Magath and Willy Tybur as well as Eren’s intervention of Willy’s grand event and MAPPA has received plenty of praise for animating the series.

Admittedly, the episode was extremely exciting with the last sequence showing Eren flinging a crushed Willy Tybur into the air. However, fans have realized that Hajime Isayama’s raw and gritty art style could not be properly captured in the anime. While MAPPA did a great job with high-quality animation techniques and excellent direction, it could not retain the manga’s rawness.

Despite the presence of the anime series, reading the original Attack on Titan manga is still recommended by many. By reading the manga, you can easily notice the development of Hajime Isayama’s art style and chapter 100 can even be considered one of his peak creations.

The Attack on Titan anime is currently streaming on Hulu and the manga is available on Kodansha’s website.
