Isekai is a sub-genre of anime where a character is transported, reincarnated, or trapped in another world. Often, this other world is closer to medieval times and has fantasy elements such as magic. This genre is one of the most popular genres in the anime industry right now, and as a result, there has been a lot of really amazing anime.
However, for one reason or another, there aren’t many isekai anime on Netflix, which makes them really hard to find. So, if you’re looking for some amazing Isekai to binge this May, this article is your guide. Let’s dive in.
1 Uncle from Another World
This anime is a really unique take on the isekai genre itself. Instead of the character going to another world and having an adventure, the character has already come back from that world. He wakes up from a 17-year coma, during which he was actually in another world. He then moves in with his nephew, and good for him, he can still perform magic.
Instead of a young hero who is made to be relatable to younger audiences, this anime uses an awkward adult. The story focuses more on comedy and the aftermath of returning to the original world rather than a standard plot of defeating a Demon King. This is definitely among the best comedy isekai anime, making it a perfect anime if you’re looking for a unique take.
2 Overlord

However, unlike many major isekai anime that follow this theme, the protagonist, now called Ainz, is actually one of the strongest in that world to begin with.
Another unique twist here is that instead of being the savior or some hero, the main character acts as a villain. This anime prioritizes world-building and political planning over straightforward combat because otherwise, Ainz will always win.
All four seasons of this anime are available to stream on Netflix, including the 2024 movie Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom, which has been recently added to the streamer. Therefore, it’s the perfect anime to binge if you’re more into the world-building than action.
3 The Rising of the Shield Hero

The other guys who have been summoned end up receiving the powers of sword, bow, and spear. However, Naofumi receives a shield that makes others look down on him. Furthermore, he is framed by a woman for crimes he never committed.
The initial season, which unfortunately is the only one that can be streamed on Netflix, establishes a strong story based on betrayal, unfairness, and survival. However, later seasons experience a significant drop in quality, relying heavily on repetitive formulas and lower stakes. It remains noteworthy solely for its strong first season.
4 Magic Knight Rayearth
Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu from Magic Knight Rayearth | Credit: Three middle-school girls are transported from Tokyo to the magical world of Cephiro, where they are tasked with becoming Magic Knights to rescue the world’s central pillar and return home. Created in the 1990s, this is a rather old anime on this list.
However, this anime is historically important to the isekai genre. It effectively mixes magical girl elements with robot combat, that too, in an isekai world – practically bringing together 3 genres. This anime is amazing for fans who appreciate the classics of this medium. Both seasons of this anime can be streamed on Netflix.
5 NiNoKuni
Yuu and Haru from NiNoKuni | Credit: OLMTwo high school students travel between the real world and a fantasy world. Their objective is to save their childhood friend, whose life is physically linked to the princess of the fantasy world. This anime is not a full season, but a standalone film, adapting the visual style of the video game franchise.
Since it’s a movie adapted from a video game franchise, there is some loss of depth that comes from runtime constraints. However, it’s still worth a binge if you’re into the isekai genre.
